Meeting A Calm And Smiling Husky
Earlier this year, Mickey and her boyfriend made a visit to a shelter in California with hopes of finding a new companion.
Having recently lost their previous pet, they were eager to bring another dog into their lives. Though uncertain about what they might find, they eventually met Demi.
Demi immediately caught their attention with her serene and cheerful demeanor.
Mickey (who requested her last name be withheld) said to The Dodo: She was super calm and always had a huge smile on her face. Although she was surrounded by many loud barking dogs, she didn’t make a peep…
We walked her around the aisles of the shelter, and not once did she react to any of the other barking dogs. She even walked herself back into her own kennel.
The couple was instantly drawn to her and made the decision to adopt her.
A Sudden Shift In Behavior
Demi, a husky and a fairly large dog, settled into her new home with ease and was showered with affection.
Initially, everything seemed perfectly normal. She appeared relaxed and was adjusting well to her new surroundings.
Then, her behavior began to change in subtle but noticeable ways.
Mickey said: We didn’t notice anything strange in her behavior at first, except the occasional long naps, which we assumed was just in her nature.
Her energy levels were normal. It wasn’t until she started trying to burrow and den in our closet… She even tore up her favorite bed and lined up her favorite toys in a row nearby. That morning she refused to budge and went on her daily early morning walk.
Concerned by the shift, they took Demi to a veterinary clinic in California. While waiting for answers, something unexpected happened: Demi went into labor.
Although they had briefly wondered if she might be pregnant, they had dismissed the idea, assuming the shelter would have informed them.
Unfortunately, the shelter Demi came from was overcrowded and under-resourced, and mistakes like this could happen under such conditions.
A Family Grows Overnight
Even while pregnant, Demi remained gentle and affectionate, which deeply moved her new family.
She gave birth to five healthy puppies, and the couple named them Bree, Bale, Jo, Grey, and Ari.
Despite her exhaustion, Demi immediately embraced her role as a mother. Her nurturing instincts were clear from the start.
Mickey said: She never ceases to amaze us with how great her motherly and nurturing nature is.
As the weeks went by, the puppies flourished, growing up under the care of their devoted mom and loving human parents.
Though the situation had taken an unexpected turn, Mickey and her boyfriend were thrilled. They embraced the challenge and committed fully to raising Demi and her pups.
