When California animal rescuers received a concerning message about a local pet store, they knew they had to investigate. A retail shop is no place for any animal to live permanently, but it is an especially poor environment for a farmed animal.

Determined to help, they drove out to scope out the situation. What they found was a little pig who desperately needed a better life.

The rescuers spent an hour speaking with the store staff, expressing their deep concerns for the animal’s welfare. Thankfully, their persistence paid off, and the store agreed to surrender her.

They scooped the little pig up, walked out of the store, and placed her safely in their car. As the doors closed, her rescuers could finally breathe a massive sigh of relief.

Making Herself Right At Home

Now named Tootsie, the little pig didn’t take long to adjust to her new surroundings. In fact, she acted like she had been living in her rescue home her entire life.

She quickly developed a mischievous personality, insisting on being involved in everything her caretakers did. One of her absolute favorite activities was “helping” put away the groceries.

Tootsie would dive right into the shopping bags, enthusiastically ripping out the purchased items. During one memorable grocery haul, she completely destroyed a fresh package of mushrooms.

Her rescuers couldn’t help but laugh at her bold antics. As they soon realized, it was Tootsie’s world, and everyone else was just living in it.

An Instant Connection

While Tootsie loved her human rescuers, her world truly changed the moment she laid eyes on the family’s dog, Neil.

As soon as Tootsie met the sweet pup, she seemed to decide on the spot that he was her new best friend. She began following Neil around wherever he went.

Tootsie was constantly seeking his attention, wanting to be involved in whatever the dog was doing. It was an instant, undeniable bond between two completely different species.

Spending so much time with Neil started to have a hilarious effect on the little pig. Tootsie began to mimic her canine companion’s behaviors.

To her family’s amazement, Tootsie even started to bark just like Neil. She was a little ball of energy who fully believed she was part of the pack.

Every single night, Tootsie would initiate a wild routine, tearing through the house with the most insane case of the zoomies. Neil would just sit back calmly and watch his energetic little shadow go.

Following His Lead

Neil wasn’t just a playmate; he was a teacher. Because Tootsie wanted to be around him all the time, she learned how to confidently go up and down the stairs just by following him.

Neil was incredibly patient with his new pupil. Even when a mischievous Tootsie managed to pull off the dog diapers he wore, Neil remained completely unbothered.

He acted like a tolerant big brother to the rowdy pig. In return, Tootsie’s constant enthusiasm really brought out a wonderful, youthful energy in the older dog.

A Comforting Presence

Their bond extended far beyond playtime. When it was time to rest, the two were practically inseparable.

If Neil was asleep, Tootsie was fast asleep right next to him, happily cuddled up against his fur. He provided her with a sense of safety she had never known in the pet store.

Neil was also right by her side whenever she was introduced to new experiences, like trying different types of fruit for the first time. Having such a steady, loving companion made all the difference in Tootsie’s early days of freedom.

Meeting Her Own Kind

As much as Tootsie loved being a dog, her rescuers knew she eventually needed to connect with her own species. Once she was fully vaccinated and had grown a bit larger, it was time for the next big step.

Her caretakers gently introduced her to her future pig family out in the yard. Understandably, Tootsie was a little bit timid at first.

She had spent so much time with Neil and her humans that meeting other pigs was a completely new experience. But her family gave her the time and space she needed to adjust.

The Best of Both Worlds

With each passing day, interacting with the other pigs became much easier for Tootsie. She soon realized how wonderful it was to root around in the dirt, and she truly started to love her new outdoor life.

But Tootsie hasn’t forgotten her roots inside the house. She still comes indoors to visit her human family and her best friend Neil, occasionally sleeping inside if she wants to.

The whole family even enjoys indoor slumber parties together. Watching her thrive, her rescuers are incredibly excited to see her continue growing into the amazing, joyful pig she was always meant to be.
