In many ways, Bear and Haku share a relationship that is incredibly relatable to anyone with siblings in their California home.

They are almost always connected in some way, sharing their space and their days together.

Haku acts as the younger brother of the pair, always wanting to follow his older brother everywhere.

He wants to be a part of everything Bear does, looking up to him with undeniable admiration.

But this beautiful bond wasn’t always a guarantee.

When Haku was first rescued, he came from a difficult situation where he had been used as a breeding bird.

The experience had taken a heavy toll on the little cockatiel’s spirit.

He arrived at his new home with a very depressed demeanor, unsure of his surroundings and the people trying to help him.

In those early days, Haku wanted nothing to do with the outside world.

He would retreat to the very back of his aviary, trying to make himself as small as possible.

He didn’t want a lot of attention and preferred to be left entirely alone.

His rescuers worried about how they could pull the scared little bird out of his shell.

Everything shifted the day Haku met Bear.

The moment the two interacted, the little bird’s entire world seemed to open up.

When Bear would come near the enclosure, Haku’s spirit visibly brightened.

It was the breakthrough his family had been desperately hoping to see.

Finding His Voice

Encouraged by his new friend’s gentle presence, Haku started to find his voice.

He would actually start calling out to Bear, saying things like, “Yoo-hoo!”

Having Bear around allowed the traumatized cockatiel to finally feel safe enough to trust.

Slowly but surely, that trust extended to his human caretakers as well, and he even began eating right out of their hands.

The Annoying Little Brother

Today, Haku is fully out of his shell and embraces his role as the annoying younger sibling.

He will happily sit next to Bear, whistling and singing to him just to get his attention.

If Bear doesn’t give him the reaction he wants, Haku takes matters into his own beak.

He will lean over and give Bear little nibbles on his ear, as if to say, “Did you hear what I was saying?”

Through all the whistling, singing, and ear nibbles, Bear remains incredibly patient.

He is an amazing good sport about Haku’s constant need for attention.

While their interactions are closely monitored for safety, the love between them has blossomed for years.

It is a beautiful friendship built on mutual trust and gentle understanding.

A Life Transformed

Looking back, Haku’s transformation is nothing short of miraculous.

His family knows that if it wasn’t for Bear’s comforting presence, they might still have that scared little cockatiel hiding in the back of the cage.

Instead, the two have formed a very close bond that defines their everyday lives.

Spending time with each other isn’t just a habit; it’s the highlight of their daily routine.
