Growing old is hard, but for this senior dog and his lifelong best friend, a little creativity and a lot of love are making his golden years shine.
A Lifelong Bond
For one devoted dog mom in California, life without her best friend, Raffi, is simply unimaginable. The two have shared a bond that spans the most important milestones of her life.
She adopted Raffi when she was just 15 years old. Since then, the sweet dog has been by her side through high school, college, and her transition into adult life.
He was even her prom date in high school, proving just how inseparable the pair had become over the years.
Signs Of Slowing Down
As the years passed, the inevitable signs of aging began to catch up with Raffi. His energy levels dropped, and his body simply couldn’t do what it used to do.
At a certain point, Raffi even started protesting his walks. He would stop in his tracks, unable to keep up the pace he once enjoyed.
“Of course I was upset, but everyone ages,” his mom shared, recognizing that her beloved companion was entering a new chapter of his life.
Finding A New Way To Roll
Even though Raffi couldn’t walk like he used to, his heart still longed for adventure. He clearly wanted to be included and stay close to his family.
His desire to still be a part of everything inspired his mom to find a creative solution. If Raffi couldn’t walk, she would make sure he could roll.
She introduced a wagon into their daily routine, giving the senior dog a comfortable way to tag along on their outdoor excursions.
That Big Old-Man Smile
The wagon turned out to be a massive success. Raffi quickly learned that getting into his special ride meant they were heading somewhere fun.
Whenever he gets to ride in the wagon, his joy is undeniable. He flashes a massive, happy grin, showing off what his mom affectionately calls his “little broken old-man teeth.”
With the wind in his fur and his mom pulling him along, Raffi gets to experience the world just like he used to, without any of the physical strain.
Struggling At Home
While the wagon solved their outdoor adventures, Raffi was also facing new challenges indoors. His legs were growing weaker, making everyday tasks difficult.
Eventually, Raffi started having trouble getting up onto things around the house. The couch and the bed, once easy resting spots, became impossible obstacles.
To keep him comfortable, his mom had to constantly lift him up and down so he could rest in his favorite spots.
The Gift Of Mobility
Knowing that Raffi needed more independence at home, help arrived in the form of a thoughtful present. His mom was gifted two pet ramps designed to assist senior dogs.
She quickly put the ramps together, placing one by the couch and the other by the bed. It was a simple change, but it meant the world to the aging pup.
“We have mobility,” she cheered, excited to give her best friend a sense of freedom back.
Tears Of Joy And Grief
The first time Raffi successfully navigated the ramp, the moment carried a heavy emotional weight for his mom. It was a bittersweet milestone.
“I did get a little emotional because it is, in part, grieving,” she explained. “Change is hard, and watching someone you love a lot get old is hard.”
But through the tears, there was immense relief. They were celebrating the fact that Raffi finally had a way to get on the couch comfortably and safely.
Taking It At His Own Pace
Adjusting to the new ramps took a little bit of practice. On night two of training, Raffi was still a bit shy about using the ramp to get into bed.
Because he needed more assistance, his mom stayed right by his side, gently encouraging him with treats and praise.
“I’m gonna let him go at his own pace, but we’re getting better,” she noted, patiently guiding him until he felt confident enough to make the climb.
Cherishing Every Moment
Caring for an aging pet requires a shift in perspective, but for Raffi’s mom, every extra effort is completely worth it.
“Life with a senior dog is a lot of patience, but it’s also a lot of cherishing every moment we have together,” she shared.
Thanks to a wagon, a pair of ramps, and an endless supply of love, Raffi is living out his golden years surrounded by gratitude for every single day they share.
