Few things are harder to take in than the way some animals are treated by the very people who should have kept them safe.
Stories like that carry a special kind of sadness, especially when the animal at the center of it is still so small and helpless. Baby Gina, a tiny puppy in the Bronx, had already known far too much pain for one little life.
Instead of being surrounded by warmth, love, and care, she had been neglected, mistreated, and left behind inside an apartment building.
When Baby Gina realized no one was coming back for her, she did the only thing she could. With barely any strength left, she began pulling herself through the hallway.
She was weak. She was desperate. But she kept moving anyway, hoping that someone would notice her and give her the help she so badly needed.
A Desperate Search For Help

A compassionate tenant in the building noticed the frail puppy struggling down the hallway and immediately went to check on her. The sight that greeted her was heartbreaking.
The tiny brown-and-white puppy was painfully thin, trembling, and unable to stand. She looked lost and terrified.
The tenant quickly contacted NYC Second Chance Rescue, a local animal group known for helping neglected animals.
Rescuers arrived soon after, and their hearts broke when they saw Baby Gina. She was so weak that each step seemed to drain her energy.
They rushed her to the hospital for immediate treatment. The puppy was vomiting, severely dehydrated, and close to lifeless.
A Fight For Survival
Tests showed Baby Gina was anemic, suffering from a urinary tract infection, and at risk of refeeding syndrome, a dangerous condition that can happen when severely starved animals begin to eat too quickly.

Determined to save her, the rescuers and medical team quickly put together a careful recovery plan to stabilize her while hoping she could pull through.
“There are so many unknowns. We are just praying she can pull through. She is just a baby,” Second Chance Rescue shared in a Facebook post.
A Glimmer Of Hope

Baby Gina’s story quickly spread online, drawing support from animal lovers everywhere. Under the constant care of her rescuers, she started to improve.
She began eating again, moving more easily, and showing glimpses of her playful personality.

“Gina remains hospitalized and is doing well. She is happy, she is loved, and she is recovering. She even has a bunch of new sweaters to keep her warm while she gains weight,” Second Chance Rescue shared on Facebook.
Authorities are still investigating the case to find out who is responsible for her suffering. For now, Baby Gina is surrounded by love, warmth, and care.
