Dogs have a way of giving love back with their whole hearts once they finally feel safe enough to trust it.
Pork Roll, an affectionate American Bully, became one of those dogs who showed just how much patience and care can mean. His story, though, did not begin with the gentleness he deserved.
His first owners turned him away because of his weight, leaving him behind with a need that went far deeper than hunger. What he wanted most was kindness, a family, and someone who would look at him with understanding instead of rejection.
For a while, that kind of love must have felt out of reach.
But eventually, Porky’s uncertain life began to turn into something far brighter. After everything he had been missing, he finally found warmth, comfort, happiness, and the kind of home he should have had all along.
Early Struggles And Abandonment

Porky’s story began in Virginia, where he was purchased from a breeder as a puppy. For two years, he lived with his original family, but eventually, they surrendered him, citing “skin issues” as their reason for giving him up.
The underlying truth was different. Porky had become approximately forty pounds overweight, and his family was unwilling to manage his health needs.
South of the Bully, a rescue organization in Charlotte, North Carolina, intervened at that point. With their care and dedication, Porky’s journey toward recovery began in earnest.
“Turns out, him being FORTY pounds overweight was the real underlying problem. Once his weight went down, the rashes and skin problems disappeared too. He’s now down to 65 lbs & looking great,” Skip wrote on Instagram.
After months of consistent care and monitoring, Porky reached a healthy weight, ready to meet a family who would truly value him.
Finding A Forever Family

Skip and Graham, a couple residing in Asheville, North Carolina, discovered Pork Roll’s story and instantly felt a connection.
Already parents to two dogs, Athena, a senior female, and Dime, a rescue male, they decided to welcome Porky into their home as an additional family member.
From the moment he arrived, Porky adapted seamlessly, behaving as if he had always been part of the household. He treated Athena like a maternal figure while forming a playful partnership with Dime, exploring their home and enjoying shared adventures.

Porky’s affectionate, playful personality quickly became evident.
Skip and Graham delighted in observing his joyful antics, his endearing mix of clinginess, humor, and love for attention.

Whenever his owners left the room, Porky whined until they returned. He made unusual, comical noises whenever something caught his attention.
Even when Athena and Dime were uninterested in interaction, Porky persisted in showing his affection, ensuring his adoration was unmistakable.
Facing Loss And Health Challenges

Life introduced heartbreak as Athena, the calm, nurturing senior dog, crossed the rainbow bridge. Her absence left the household grieving, and Porky deeply felt the loss.
In response, his bond with Dime strengthened, with the two becoming inseparable companions.
Unfortunately, more struggles followed.

Challenges continued when both dogs encountered serious medical conditions.
Dime developed degenerative myelopathy, while Porky was diagnosed with intervertebral disc disease paralysis (IVDD), a rare condition for a dog of his age and breed.
The IVDD diagnosis required urgent surgical intervention.
“We had heard of things, but did not know about IVDD in detail or just how dangerous it really is. And how EASILY it can happen even in young dogs,” his family shared on Instagram.

With surgery, prescribed medications, and ongoing physical therapy, Porky is steadily improving.
Despite facing significant obstacles, he continues to display the joyous spirit that initially captured his family’s hearts.
“Hoping with everything that one day he’ll be able to stand, walk, run, and kick again,” his family wrote on Instagram.
