One thing I will never quite understand is why anyone brings home a dog they never really wanted in the first place.
Why put an innocent pup through confusion, hurt, and heartbreak if they were never going to be treated like family? It makes even less sense when some people go on to neglect or mistreat the animal, as if the dog somehow caused the situation. Spoiler: the dog is never the problem.
That was the painful reality for one Great Dane who had already been through far too much. He was so underfed that his bones could clearly be seen. Thankfully, his story did not stay in that dark place forever, and little by little, things finally began to change for the better.
Avenue’s Struggle For Survival
When Avenue was first brought to the S.O.A.R. Initiative in Indiana, no one could believe how dire his condition was.
Upon seeing him, it was clear that this poor pup had suffered terribly due to an uncaring owner.
Fortunately, local law enforcement spotted him wandering the streets and quickly contacted the rescue team. That call ultimately saved his life.
At only four to six months old, no one could tell how long Avenue had been starving. He was so frail that he couldn’t even climb out of the vehicle on his own.
The rescue team understood the urgency of his condition. They immediately put him on a strict feeding schedule.
Avenue had to be fed every three to four hours, which sometimes meant the volunteers stayed awake all night to make sure he was getting enough food.
This rigorous plan was the only way to help him gain the weight he desperately needed, and that became the top priority.
From Frail To Thriving
Despite his fragile state, Avenue never gave up. Each passing day showed progress, and his life started to change dramatically.
Soon, his spirits lifted, and the team realized just how sweet and joyful he was. His personality began to shine through, and the transformation was incredible.
The first time Avenue managed to run again, everyone at the shelter celebrated the achievement.
As his health improved, the team focused on training him for adoption. To their delight, Avenue quickly mastered commands, eager to keep learning.
A Happy Ending For Avenue
Months passed, and after five months of dedicated care, Avenue was barely recognizable. His weight had increased from 58 pounds to 94, and he looked strong and healthy.
The rescuers were thrilled to see his incredible recovery, but the best news was still to come.
Avenue was placed on the adoption list, and applications poured in. Before long, Avenue had a new family waiting for him in Indiana.
Though the shelter staff felt bittersweet about saying goodbye, they were overjoyed that he was finally going to live the happy life he had always deserved. And I couldn’t be happier for him.
