Meeting Demi, The Calm And Cheerful Husky
Earlier this year, Mickey and her boyfriend visited a shelter in California, hoping to find a new companion.
Having recently lost their previous pet, they were ready to bring another dog into their lives. Unsure of what they might find, they eventually met Demi.
Demi immediately captured their attention with her calm and happy nature.
Mickey (who preferred to keep her last name private) told The Dodo: “She was super calm and always had a huge smile on her face. Although she was surrounded by many loud barking dogs, she didn’t make a peep…
We walked her around the aisles of the shelter, and not once did she react to any of the other barking dogs. She even walked herself back into her own kennel.”
The couple instantly connected with her and decided to adopt Demi.
A Change In Behavior Raises Concerns
Demi, a large husky, quickly adjusted to her new home and was showered with love and attention.
At first, everything seemed to be going smoothly. She appeared relaxed and was settling in well.
However, over time, her behavior started to change in subtle yet noticeable ways.
Mickey shared: “We didn’t notice anything strange at first, except the occasional long naps, which we assumed were just part of her nature. Her energy levels seemed normal. But then, Demi began trying to burrow and den in the closet. She even tore up her favorite bed and lined up her favorite toys in a row nearby.”
One morning, she refused to move and skipped her daily walk.
Worried about the shift, the couple took Demi to a veterinary clinic in California. While they were awaiting answers, something unexpected occurred: Demi went into labor.
Although they had briefly wondered if Demi might be pregnant, they had dismissed the thought, assuming the shelter would have informed them.
Unfortunately, the shelter Demi came from had been overcrowded and under-resourced, and mistakes like this could easily happen under such conditions.
A New Family Forms
Even while pregnant, Demi remained gentle and affectionate, which deeply touched her new family.
She gave birth to five healthy puppies, and the couple named them Bree, Bale, Jo, Grey, and Ari.
Despite the physical toll of childbirth, Demi embraced her role as a mother with immediate devotion. Her nurturing instincts were evident from the start.
Mickey said: “She never ceases to amaze us with how great her motherly and nurturing nature is.”
As the weeks passed, the puppies thrived, growing up under the care of their loving mother and the couple.
While the situation took a surprising turn, Mickey and her boyfriend were thrilled and ready for the new adventure. They committed fully to raising Demi and her puppies.
