Nobody expects to find a surprise in a quiet field during an ordinary walk, and yet that morning felt different.
While passing a field near Desert Edge High School in Goodyear, Arizona, a teenage girl came across an Amazon box sitting in a field. It looked carefully sealed and out of place, almost as if whoever left it there hoped it would go unnoticed.
The girl felt that something wasn’t right and decided to investigate the matter.
She knelt beside the box and lifted a flap. Once the girl saw what was inside, she was stunned.
A Strange Discovery In The Field
There was a scared kitten trapped inside the box.
The girl carried the box and rushed home to show it to her parents.
Since the family had recently adopted from Buckeye Animal Rescue & Kennel, they knew exactly who to call.
Shortly afterward, BARK founder Lilia Mutka was on her way to help the frightened cat hidden inside.
Rescue And First Steps Toward Safety
When Mutka arrived, she gently lifted the cat from the box. The animal was trembling with fear. Nobody knew how many hours she had spent alone in the box.
The rescuer could tell the kitten was exhausted. She curled up in Mutka’s arms as if she was looking for comfort.
Mutka took the kitten to BARK’s home base and settled her into a quiet room where she could relax.
She scheduled a vet appointment in order to check the kitten’s health, update vaccines, and run necessary tests.
During the exam, the rescuers made a discovery that left them surprised.
The cat had a microchip which revealed that her name was Betty Davis. According to the microchip data, she had earlier been adopted from Pammy’s Second Chance Rescue.
The staff at Buckeye Animal Rescue & Kennel wondered how she ended up left alone in such a dangerous place.
Mutka immediately informed her friends at Pammy’s Second Chance Rescue about the situation. It didn’t take long for a team member to arrive and bring Betty Davis back to their facility.
They planned to contact her previous adopter and learn what happened before she was abandoned.
A Community That Shows Up
News of Betty Davis spread quickly through Goodyear, and people were relieved that she had been found before the heat caused greater harm.
BARK shared updates and reminded the community how important microchipping is in moments like these. They also praised the girl whose quick action and compassion saved Betty’s life.
“We are grateful for amazing adopters, volunteers and supporters who DO Something, and help get the abandoned kitties the help they need! Thank you for your beautiful hearts!,” BARK wrote on Facebook.
Betty Davis is now safe. The staff pamper her with care and give her a lot of love. They let her know that she will never face the world alone again.
