A Neglected Iowa Pup Spends Years Waiting For The One Person Who Won’t Walk Away

When you look at Avery, a beautiful split-toned Pittie, you might imagine she grew up in a warm and loving home.

Her history, however, carries far more pain than anyone would expect.

This is the story of a strong, determined dog who continues to hold on to the belief that her forever family is out there.

Avery’s Journey Begins

Avery is a three-year-old Pit Bull whose early life was filled with fear and mistreatment. After being removed from that unsafe home, she spent the next two years living inside a shelter.

At the Marion County Humane Society in Knoxville, Iowa, her current caregivers work hard to make her feel safe and valued. They admire how appreciative Avery is for every act of kindness she receives.

She arrived at the Iowa shelter after an estranged member of her former household surrendered her. He reported seeing “many marks on her as if she were beaten with a stick.”

Many details about her past remain unknown, but one fact has become clear. Avery is now far from danger and surrounded by people who want the best for her.

In the beginning, she struggled to understand her new environment. Consistent affection was unfamiliar. According to the team at Marion County Humane Society, she eventually “learned to be loved.”

Challenges Along the Way

Even after adjusting, Avery still faced obstacles.

A veterinary exam uncovered a low grade heart murmur that requires daily medication and ongoing monitoring. With proper care, her condition should not hold her back from living an enjoyable life.

She also deals with allergies that affect her paws and skin. These are being treated with medication and may improve once she moves into a calm and consistent home.

Avery also went through a frightening experience when another Pit Bull attacked her during treat time at the shelter.

“She was severely attacked by one at the shelter. Totally out of the blue. Fortunately, we were able to pour water on them and got them apart, but Avery was severely injured and had to be rushed to an emergency vet,” the humane society explains in a Facebook post.

Hoping For A Second Chance

Although Avery is grateful for the comfort she receives at the shelter, she dreams of having a family of her own. She was adopted once, only to be returned the same day for reasons that were never fully explained.

Despite that setback, she has not lost hope.

Avery continues to show her friendly and open-hearted nature. She loves people and gets along well with many dogs, although she cannot live with cats.

Some of her favorite activities are tug of war, munching on ice cubes, and enjoying treats. With her sweet personality and playful spirit, she has so much love to offer.Anyone interested in giving this deserving girl her forever home can reach out to the Marion County Humane Society for more information.
