Animals sometimes find themselves in places where they have no way to climb out or call for help. Helpless and scared, they put their faith in humans and hope that someone will notice them.
A small kitten who got trapped in a storm drain in San Antonio, felt desperate and hoped to be saved.
She felt so frightened and looked up toward the sky, crying for help as loud as she could. Although the situation was difficult, the kitten knew that hope was all she had and refused to give up on herself.
Waiting For Help
As soon as Rosemarie Tutak, an officer at San Antonio Animal Care Services, received a call about a kitten trapped in a storm drain, she headed to the spot.
When she arrived, everything was quiet in the drain.
While Tutak was searching for the kitten, three children and their father walked over.
They explained that earlier that day they had seen a small calico kitten stuck in the drain. Since they were worried that no one would notice, they wrote a note and placed it nearby to make sure someone would help her.
Tutak followed the directions written on the note and soon heard desperate meows coming from deep inside the drain.
Once she lifted the manhole cover, she saw the kitten clinging to the inside wall.
The family watched from across the street, hoping the officer would pull her to safety.
Tutak could not climb down, so she lowered a blanket tied to a rope. The kitten knew what she needed to do right away, and she reached for it and held on.
Slowly, Tutak pulled her up and out of the drain.
Once on the ground, the kitten breathed a sigh of relief. She was starving and quickly ate the food offered to her.
Tutak checked her and was glad to find that she had no injuries. She was frightened and hungry, but safe at last.
Mimi’s Road To Recovery
The children were so happy that the kitten had been rescued, and they rushed over to meet her. They named her Mimi.
Tutak drove Mimi to the San Antonio ACS facility so she could rest and recover from the ordeal. Staff gave her food and time to decompress after the stressful experience.
Fortunately, in the days that followed, Mimi relaxed and regained her strength.
It did not take long for someone to offer her a forever home once she was old enough.
The children who first noticed her remained grateful that she was safe, but the staff made sure they knew the truth.
Without their note, Mimi might not have been found in time. They were the ones who recognized a kitten in trouble and took action.
Right now, Mimi is in foster care, gaining strength as she waits for the day she can go home with her forever humans.
She could not wait to turn a new leaf and live the life she always dreamed of.
