Dogs feel deeply when they’re left behind. They may not understand why their human is gone, but they know the ache of being alone.
The places they’re abandoned still hold the memory of love they believed would last forever, and their devotion keeps them waiting, longing for a familiar face that will never return.
A young pup named Slugger had his heart broken too when his owners abandoned him on a baseball field in South Texas. Dumped in the pouring rain, he crouched low against the thunder and lightning, clinging to the only comfort he had: a discarded onion sack.
Through it all, Slugger never moved far. Weak, cold, and covered in ticks, he still kept waiting for the people he believed would come back.
A Rescue in the Rain

Fortunately, someone noticed Slugger while he was waiting in the flooded baseball field and contacted Dallas Dog Rescue Rehab Reform (Dallas DogRRR), urging them to help.
Upon hearing that the puppy had been left alone in the storm, the rescue team rushed to the site. At first, they could not spot him in the downpour, but after a careful search, one rescuer finally found Slugger.
The sight was heartbreaking: the tiny pup sat quietly on an old onion sack, shivering and waiting for the people who had abandoned him.
“And there he was,” Dallas DogRRR wrote on their website. “Soaked. Cold. Frozen in fear. Just waiting. He never tried to run. He never barked. He just stayed, like he believed someone was coming back.”
It was painfully clear that Slugger did not realize he had been left behind. He clung to the belief that his family would return, but as Dallas DogRRR director Patti Dawson told The Dodo, “[H]e’d almost given up.”
The Road to Healing

When Slugger arrived at the Dallas DogRRR facility, his condition revealed just how much he had suffered.
He was weak and emaciated, covered in ticks of every size. His skin was raw, his body riddled with worms, and his anemia left him dangerously frail. Yet beneath the fear and exhaustion, staff and volunteers recognized a gentle soul who still longed for affection.
“His temperament was super sweet, so he had definitely been handled by humans before,” Dawson said. With steady medical care, soothing baths, and the patience of his caregivers, Slugger began to recover.

Updates from the Texas rescue shared his progress.
By July 5, his anemia was improving, though his skin remained fragile and his body still carried the toll of parasites. He was receiving regular treatments and was expected to move into a medical foster home once he stabilized. Despite the slow process, hope grew stronger with each step forward.
Just five days later, on July 10, the rescue celebrated his incredible transformation. Slugger had gone from barely able to stand to racing around with couch zoomies in his foster home. His baths no longer symbolized survival. They had become part of his new life, one filled with comfort and care.
A New Beginning

Dallas DogRRR gave Slugger his name because he had fought so hard to survive.
And in just a few weeks, he flourished into the playful pup who loved playing with toys. His foster family soon discovered his favorite pastime: gathering all his toys into a big pile on his bed, a small but clear sign of the joy he had rediscovered.
“Watching the transformation of Slugger has been absolutely amazing,” Dawson said.

Shortly afterwards, the sweet pup stole the heart of a great family who made the commitment to adopt. Today, Slugger is no longer the frightened pup sitting in a flooded baseball field. Instead, he is a cherished family member, showered with affection, security, and as many toys as his heart desired.
