Imagine receiving an email saying someone found your missing dog and that he was safe. You would be stunned, thrilled, and probably overwhelmed with joy. That is usually the case.
But for Maile, the message was nothing short of terrifying. She froze in disbelief.
Why?
Because her beloved Chihuahua, Jazzy, was supposed to be gone forever, having crossed the rainbow bridge nearly two years earlier.
Was this some cruel trick? It did not feel funny.

“The lady told him she had died three months prior,” Trist said. “About a year and half went by, and lots and lots of grieving. I felt horrible for ever giving her to them because I thought I wasn’t there for her last moments.”
Maile was crushed.
Fast-forward to the day Maile’s inbox carried the unthinkable message.
The only thing keeping her grounded was knowing Jazzy had been microchipped. That would confirm whether this was a cruel lie or a miracle.
And then came the result. It was true. It really was her Jazzy.
“I automatically headed home from my job and got in the car and headed to her,” Maile said. “I was crying on and off the whole way there, which was almost a three-hour drive. I couldn’t believe she was still alive and I had no idea how she ended up that far away, but in those moments, I did not care.”
During that long drive, one fear tormented her. Would Jazzy forgive her for leaving her with the couple? Would her little dog still recognize her as family?
“She kind of went to sniff around, but came right back to me and gave me even more kisses,” Maile said. “She would not leave my lap or my arms the whole car ride home, either.”
When Maile finally arrived, her fears melted away.
Their reunion was as perfect as she had dreamed. Jazzy clung to her as though no time had passed. It was clear the dog understood that Maile had never abandoned her willingly.
Jazzy had been found in a rock quarry in Cedar Vale, Kansas. At eleven years old, no one knew how she ended up there or what dangers she endured. Somehow, the tiny survivor held on until fate returned her to the person she loved most.
Now, with Maile in a steady job and a settled life, she could finally provide Jazzy with the golden years she deserved.
Jazzy is older now, and her body is starting to show it. For her, being reunited with Maile came at the perfect time. It gave her stability, comfort, and care in her most vulnerable years.
Senior dogs need us more than ever. If your companion is not as active as before or seems unwell, the answer is never abandonment. Aging is a fragile stage in every dog’s life, and loyalty from their humans is critical.
Sadly, many older dogs are surrendered to shelters simply because they are no longer young. This heartbreaking reality must change.
We need to stand together and spread awareness that every dog, regardless of age, deserves a loving family.
