Many senior dogs lose their homes simply because their families move somewhere pets are not allowed. Sadly, some owners do not even try to rehome them, leaving them to fend for themselves or dropping them at shelters instead.
Instead, they get dumped out on the cold streets or surrendered to a shelter, so other people do it for them. It’s cruel and they don’t deserve that.
This was the harsh reality for one elderly pup in Ohio, who inexplicably ended up outside a rescue meant only for cats.
A Lonely Dog Appears At A Cat Rescue
On an ordinary day at Tabby Tails Cat Rescue, staff member Kay Banks noticed something unusual outside the building.
At first glance, she assumed the wandering dog belonged to a neighbor, but the truth soon became clear.
The poor pup had been abandoned, circling the cat rescue with nowhere to go. Kay opened the door and let her in without hesitation.
Up close, she saw the dog’s graying fur and realized she was a senior.
Kay gave her the name Honey and later confirmed that she was at least 15 years old. The dog did have a microchip, so Kay contacted her previous owners, but heartbreakingly, they made it clear they did not want her back.
From that moment, Honey was under Kay’s care.
Honey Proves Herself To Be A Sweet Soul
Kay wanted Honey to find a loving home, though she knew it would be challenging. Her rescue primarily focused on cats, and Honey’s age made her harder to place.
Taking her to a dog shelter was considered, but Kay worried the odds of euthanasia were too high if a family did not step forward quickly. Until a solution was found, she committed herself to looking after the senior pup as best she could.
Honey suffered from arthritis, so Kay arranged laser therapy treatments. The sessions eased her pain and allowed her to move more comfortably.
Beyond that, Honey dealt with several minor health problems, including long nails, fleas, and ticks. Thankfully, a visit to the vet helped address those issues.
In time, Honey settled happily into Kay’s home. She thrived on attention and companionship, proving herself to be gentle and affectionate despite her hardships.
Though Kay remains hopeful someone will open their heart to a senior dog, she is content to give Honey the love and care she deserves until that day arrives.
