Animals, like people, possess emotions, and sometimes they feel them even more deeply.
That’s why it’s always heartbreaking when someone abandons their little companion, fully aware that their human was their whole world.
A passerby in the Bronx, New York, witnessed just such a tragedy when she spotted a tiny head protruding from a bag dangling off a dumpster.
Cruelly Left Like Trash
Curious and concerned, the woman approached the container and discovered a small ferret peering out from the bag.
Disturbed by the sight, she wasted no time contacting Small n Furry Rescue for assistance.
“I saw the email and my heart dropped,” a Small n Furry Rescue representative told The Dodo.
Upon arrival, the rescuer sprang into action, carefully extracting the ferret and preparing her for transport to safety.
“I am working on getting the ferret transported to the rescue. Once safe with me I will have him evaluated by a veterinarian. As long as he does not need to be held as evidence (the finder will be reporting the abandonment to NYC animal control) the ferret will be looking for a new home once cleared by a vet,” she posted on her official Facebook page.
Because owning a ferret is illegal in New York City, the rescuer followed proper protocol. She knew exactly what steps to take.
She Was Finally Safe
Dubbed Trash Panda, this little female ferret was finally in caring hands, awaiting her veterinary exam.
“Despite being found thrown away like trash, this little ferret seems to be in great spirits. She appears to be quite young and has no obvious injuries,” her rescuer shared on Facebook.
In a later update, she noted that Trash Panda is estimated to be six to eight months old and is a Marshall’s ferret—no wonder she was so sweet and affectionate.
The vet’s assessment soon arrived. Though there were no life-threatening issues, Trash Panda’s health was shaky.
“Her heart rate was over 300 beats per minute, very fast for a ferret. Our vet did a brief cardiac exam and has come to the conclusion that she may be in some sort of shock. Considering we don’t know how long she was in the bag and possibly without food or water, this could all be from lack of nutrition and dehydration, but we are watching her closely,” her rescuer reported.
Initial blood tests also showed anemia and low platelets, meaning she’d need medication for a while.
Yet despite her rough start, Trash Panda’s playful spirit shone through—and one clinic nurse even fell in love, considering adoption once Trash Panda recovered.
Over the next few days, her improvement was clear: she became more energetic, and her health metrics steadily climbed.
Before long, she was ready to find her forever home.
Waiting For The Happy Ending
On November 23, alongside Thanksgiving greetings, her rescuer posted the best news yet.
“Trash Panda, the baby ferret that was found tied to a dumpster in the Bronx, is doing fantastic! She is continuing to gain weight, her symptoms are improving and her true playful personality is starting to show!” she wrote.
Most importantly, Trash Panda now has an amazing forever home lined up—with two resident ferrets eagerly awaiting her once she’s fully healed. Soon, she’ll experience the happiest ending imaginable.
And we can only imagine her excitement, given how social ferrets are.
