How do you respond to finding a dog being abandoned, ever? It’s just heartbreaking to imagine the kind of pain and distress these four-legged creatures go through when they realize their owners have left them for good.
But, even then, some kind souls compose themselves and do what’s best for the animals. Recently, Kaytleen Robertson, an Uber driver, proved her kindness when she spotted a tiny crate with a shocking surprise abandoned on the side of the road in Lamar County, Mississippi.
Instead of driving by, she immediately stopped her car – and decided to do something about it.
Abandoned Just Before A Storm
Kaytleen couldn’t believe her eyes. Even though she had a passenger in the car, she decided to pull over and get a closer look at the situation. Then, she saw it. A tiny dog was sitting in a crate, abandoned and all alone.
Aware of the upcoming storm, Kaytleen couldn’t leave the pup in such a heartbreaking condition. She loaded her into her car and drove her home. Then, hoping to get the attention of a rescue organization, she posted a photo of the pup on Facebook.
“I just saw this sweet baby on the side of the road. Can anyone take it? It’s starting to rain too,” she wrote.
Fortunately, the pup didn’t have to wait long for a second chance. When Tamara Huff, the director of Hub City Humane Society, saw the post, it broke her heart. The fact that the pup had a collar on was even more devastating.
“This poor dog was dumped in a kennel in an area with no people around, with a collar still attached — a heartbreaking sign that he once had a home. Alone, scared, and confused, he waited for someone to notice him, not understanding why he had been left behind,” the Mississippi rescue wrote on Facebook.
She knew gaining the dog’s trust would be a long road, but she didn’t have any doubts. The pup, Rocky Road, was admitted to the facility and welcomed with open arms.
Hopes For A Second Chance
Huff and the rest of the team made sure Rocky Road had everything he needed. She gained a lot of friends right off the bat and had the best care, but still needed some time to adjust.
Given her trauma, Rocky had a hard time trusting anyone. She hid in corners, staying away from humans or any interaction. Whenever the staff wanted to approach her, she trembled in her tiny kennel.
The team worked with the dog with a lot of patience. They tried to gain her trust gradually with treats and kind words – and it eventually worked.
After only a week, Rocky Road was a brand-new dog. She was so loving and sweet, exhibiting her happy tail wag and her unique stomps.
Now, all she wants to do is sit in laps, cuddle, and play.
While she’s still learning all about life around people and other dogs, the Mississippi rescue reminds dog lovers in search of a companion to check out their other pups.
“This sweet puppy will be available for adoption in a few weeks, but in the meantime, we have TONS of puppies just like her waiting for their forever homes,” the rescue concludes.
