Young Wisconsin Pup Has Five Legs, Nine Toes, And A Story That Is Hard To Forget

Young Wisconsin Pup Has Five Legs, Nine Toes, And A Story That Is Hard To Forget

Bella, a young dog at a shelter in Wisconsin, did not get the easy start every puppy should have. Still, she has kept going, doing everything she can to move past the rough beginning life handed her.

The moment she arrived, staff knew there was something unusual about her.

Her condition was so rare and unexpected that it immediately caught everyone’s attention. In fact, none of the staff could remember ever meeting another dog with anything quite like it.

But Bella has not let that define her in a sad or limiting way.

If anything, it has made her stand out even more. Through every challenge, her spirit has stayed strong, and that same uniqueness seems to carry its own quiet kind of courage.

Bella is still holding on to the hope that one day the right family will see her and love her exactly as she is.

Bella’s Uncommon Condition

The condition is known as dimelia.

When Bella first entered the Wisconsin Humane Society, the staff were shocked. None of them could recall ever seeing a dog like her before.

While it’s not uncommon for dogs to lose a leg or two due to accidents or breeding issues, a dog with five legs is an entirely different matter.

After a thorough examination, the X-rays confirmed the surprising news. Bella had dimelia, a rare congenital condition that caused extra bones to develop, along with nine toes on one of her hind legs. This made Bella the five-legged pup.

“We were all just as floored as you likely are when we saw the X-rays! This 6-month-old puppy has dimelia, an extremely rare congenital anomaly characterized by the duplication of bones. It’s basically like an extra leg inside her right hind leg. A normal canine hind leg would have one femur, one tibia, one fibula, and 4-5 toes,” the Wisconsin Humane Society wrote on Facebook.

“X-rays of the affected leg revealed that Bella appears to have an extra femur, two tibias, two fibulas, and nine toes on her rear paw. It is the first-ever case of dimelia we’ve seen in our organization’s history, and as far as we can tell, she’s one of the very few documented cases of dimelia in a dog – ever,” they added.

Although Bella’s condition is certainly unusual, how does she feel about it?

For Bella, life goes on as usual. Thankfully, dimelia doesn’t affect her mobility. Experts explain that if the condition doesn’t cause pain or limit movement, no treatment is necessary. In rare cases where it does, amputation might be considered.

Bella shows no signs of slowing down. She loves her daily walks, happily bounding around and enjoying life like any other playful puppy.

Seeking A Special Home For A Special Pup

At the Kenosha Campus, the staff are confident that Bella will eventually find her forever family.

However, adopting a dog with such a rare condition requires a special type of adopter. It’s not enough to simply love dogs; potential owners must be prepared for the additional care Bella may require in the future.

Her unique hind leg isn’t causing any issues right now, but as she matures, joint pain and mobility challenges could become a concern. For a dog with dimelia, those challenges might be more pronounced.

Far too often, people adopt animals out of a desire to be a “savior,” without fully understanding the long-term commitment involved. It’s impossible to save every animal, but for the right person, one dog like Bella can make a huge difference.

There’s no doubt that Bella is an extraordinary pup, but adopting her means committing to the possibility of medical expenses, health concerns, and a lifelong responsibility. Owning a dog isn’t a temporary hobby; it’s a serious commitment.

If you’re not prepared to take on the realities of caring for a dog with special needs, then Bella may not be the right fit. But if you are, she could change your life as much as you change hers.

The Wisconsin Humane Society has many dogs waiting for their chance to be loved.

Bella is one of them. Will you be the one she’s been waiting for?
