When construction workers at a landfill in Texas noticed a pregnant dog roaming the property, they immediately suspected she had been left behind.
She looked frightened and hungry, moving carefully through the site as though she had no idea where she was supposed to go.
Since unwanted pets are sometimes abandoned at the landfill, the workers always try to do what they can until rescuers can step in.
They gave her food and tried to offer comfort, hoping to make her feel even a little safer, but not long after, she vanished.
A few days later, she came back looking much thinner and weaker than before. That was when the workers contacted Three Little Pitties Rescue in Houston, Texas, asking for help so she could finally get the care she needed.
Searching For A Mother And Her Hidden Puppies
Nancy Cowan, a volunteer and board member of the rescue, rushed to the landfill as soon as she was contacted. She had experience rescuing other abandoned mother dogs from the same area and was familiar with the site and its potential dangers.
She and the workers suspected that the dog, later named Lucy, had given birth and was hiding her newborn puppies to keep them safe.
Knowing that mother dogs often conceal their pups beneath dumpsters or in other protected spaces, Cowan began to search carefully, scanning for any signs of movement.
“I spotted a dumpster that had high grass growing around it and a little beaten path going under it. So that was my clue,” Cowan told The Dodo.
Crouching down low, she eventually spotted the mother dog curled protectively around her tiny, fragile puppies.
Cowan tried to approach the dog, but Lucy was too frightened to allow her near, her instinct to protect her young stronger than her trust in humans.
Undeterred, Cowan visited the site daily, bringing food and patiently working to earn Lucy’s confidence.
Gradually, Lucy began to understand that Cowan meant no harm and slowly allowed her to handle the puppies, ensuring their safety.
Once Lucy and her puppies were safely secured, Cowan contacted the rescue team, who arrived shortly afterward to transport the small family to a nursery where they could begin their recovery in safety.
For the first time, Lucy could rest and nurse her babies without fear, finally able to focus on caring for them in a secure environment.
A Fresh Start Full Of Care
During the two-month stay at the nursery, Lucy received consistent attention, care, and affection. The staff helped her heal physically and emotionally from the stress and fear she had endured.
To celebrate Mother’s Day, they created a special breakfast in bed for her.
Lucy’s joyful expression during the celebration reflected her gratitude and the peace she felt, surrounded by care and kindness.
“She is one grateful mama and we are grateful to be a part of her journey,” Three Little Pitties Rescue wrote on Instagram.
Once Lucy undergoes her spay surgery, she will be ready to find her forever home.
Her puppies are thriving as well, beginning to develop their personalities and preparing for adoption into loving families.
One puppy has already been adopted, while Rusty, Teddy, Willow, Sadie, and Cleo remain waiting for families of their own.
