Kansas Workers Hear Whimpering Underground And Make A Shocking Find

Thinking about Phelps’ story is nothing short of heartbreaking.

This brave pup was discovered trapped inside a sewer drain in Kansas, and no one could say for sure how he got there.

What rescuers did know was that he had been stuck in filthy, contaminated water for a long time. Even as flooding swept through the area, Phelps refused to give up. He kept paddling, clinging to life with every ounce of strength he had left.

His will to survive was fueled by hope — the hope that someone would find him before it was too late.

One day, Phelps’ miracle finally came.

Utility workers spotted him struggling inside the drain and immediately sprang into action, pulling him out of the sewer and saving his life.

He was taken to a local pound for temporary care.

Fortunately, one of the workers who had helped with the rescue contacted a local animal welfare group, which then reached out to Pawsitive Tails Dog Rescue in Olathe, Kansas.

The rescue team arrived quickly, and when they saw the frail, malnourished dog, their hearts broke. He was nothing but skin and bones, trembling and disoriented.

There were no clear answers about his past — only the urgent need to help him heal.

Fighting To Recover

A vet examination revealed that Phelps was severely anemic and suffering from painful paw pads burned and torn from standing in the polluted water for so long.

He also had a broken tail and a bacterial infection that needed immediate treatment.

The veterinarian prescribed antibiotics and created a special feeding plan to help him regain strength. Because of his paw injuries, Phelps had to wear protective bandages as well.

Sadly, gangrene developed in his tail, leaving no option but to amputate it.

After the surgery, his rescuers noticed an instant change.

“After he got his tail amputated, you could see the relief in his face. He instantly felt so much better,” Crystal told The Dodo.

Finding Love And A Family

Crystal, the head of Pawsitive Tails Dog Rescue, decided to foster Phelps herself. She and her family surrounded him with love and reassurance, determined to help him heal both physically and emotionally.

Gradually, Phelps began to trust again. He explored his foster home and started bonding with the family’s other dogs.

“I truly think he never had toys before but he truly loves them,” Crystal shared.

With each passing day, his strength returned. His appetite improved, his wounds healed, and his tail wags grew more frequent.

Phelps also formed a close friendship with Kato, the family’s Husky, who became his constant companion during recovery.

As he blossomed, it became clear to Crystal and her family that Phelps was already home. They decided to adopt him permanently.
