They say that heroes don’t wear capes, and they’re most certainly right!
Instead, they wear uniforms, carry ladders, rescue ropes, and always happen to be in the right place at the right time. This was exactly the case after one stormy night in Camarillo, California.
When a group of people at Ventura County Public Works arrived to check the flooded canal, they spotted a tiny lump of fur trapped in the middle of it. Upon closer inspection, they realized it was a dog trying to escape the ordeal, but unable to do so.
Wasting no time, the team immediately rushed into action to help.
Heartwarming Rescue Mission
The workers contacted Ventura County Animal Services (VCAS) for help. Within minutes, officers were on the scene, assessing the situation.
“This morning, VCAS responded to report from Ventura County Public Works Agency of a small dog trapped in the rising waters of the wash at Wood Rd. and Laguna Rd. in Camarillo,” VC Animal Services shared on Facebook.
However, the rescue mission was far from easy. The scared pup was about ten feet down the concrete canal, and on top of it, she was surrounded by fast-moving water.
After a while, the VCAS team asked the fire department for backup.
When the crew finally arrived, they deployed a ladder and sent one of their rescue swimmers to reach the dog.
For several minutes, the pup hesitated and tried to swim away from the man. But once she realized he was there to help, she gave in. In the next moment, she was safe in the arms of a rescuer.
Both the rescuer and the dog climbed back up, ending this rescue mission successfully.
“VCFD deployed a ladder and a rescue swimmer to pull the shivering, but otherwise unharmed dog out of the wash. She was quickly transported to the Camarillo Shelter where she received a vet exam and a warm kennel,” VCAS added.
Thanks to the teamwork, the small dog, a Pug or a French Bulldog mix, approximately three years old, was safely transported to the California shelter, where she could finally decompress.
Still, how she ended up in the canal in the first place remains a mystery.
The pup was immediately wrapped in a towel, showered with kindness, and fed. The entire crew welcomed her with an open heart, hoping to bring this furry girl a happy ending she deserves.
Waiting For An Update
While waiting for information about the dog, the shelter provided her with a soft bed to rest on, food, and warmth.
Although the pup didn’t initially have a microchip, the rescuers hope she has a family that she could return to.
“This sweet pug is resting comfortably in a warm, dry kennel with blankets and food. We did hear that the owner may be coming to pick her up. We’ll have an update if that occurs,” Ventura County Animal Services wrote on Facebook comments.
Until then, the team will make sure she stays safe and healthy.
