Virginia Matthews, who lives alone in a rural area near the forest in Taylorsville, Mississippi, was taking a walk one day when she heard strange noises coming from deep in the trees.
Curious and concerned, she followed the sounds—and discovered a crying puppy.
She searched the area for the owner, but there wasn’t a soul in sight. Once she realized the pup had been left on his own, Matthews made the decision to bring him home.
The Scared Puppy Didn’t Know What To Do
The little pup, who would later be named Lonely, was terrified and wouldn’t let Matthews get too close.
Still, she gently encouraged him to follow her and luckily, he did.
Once they reached her home, Lonely crawled under a camper trailer and stayed hidden, unsure if he could trust her yet.
Matthews suspected that Lonely’s mom was a stray and that they had somehow become separated.
She offered him food and water, and even picked up a bed and toys to help him feel more at ease.
For several days, she simply sat near him, speaking in a calm voice and trying to earn his trust.
After about a week, Lonely began to warm up to her. He allowed her to pet him and even started sleeping indoors.
Matthews took him to the vet for a check-up, and thankfully, he was healthy.
With his new collar and leash, Lonely began getting used to puppy pads and the routine of his new home.
Matthews posted his story on TikTok and asked for tips, admitting she hadn’t had a dog in thirty years and was still learning.
A Chance Encounter That Felt Like Fate
Not long after bringing Lonely home, Matthews discovered something unexpected.
She found out that just two days before she rescued Lonely, a group of campers had found another puppy in the same woods and taken him in.
Matthews was convinced that pup was Lonely’s sibling.
Her love and care helped Lonely gain confidence. He let go of his fear and started playing, exploring, and acting like a happy puppy again.
He became deeply attached to his new mom and followed her everywhere.
Matthews feels incredibly fortunate to have Lonely in her life and knows now that he came into it at exactly the right time.

Now, Lonely is living a happy life in his Mississippi home—and both he and Matthews are grateful they found each other.
