Kristen Lee of Becker, Minnesota, had felt connected to dogs for as long as she could remember. Ever since she was little, she pictured a life that included not just a dog of her own, but also a home that could offer comfort to pups who needed somewhere safe, even if only temporarily.
Eventually, that vision started to feel possible. She had the space, a big yard, and the kind of stability she had been waiting for. To Kristen, it felt like the right time to finally go after that long-held dream.
Still, one concern would not leave her mind.
Her three-year-old Pittie, Remi, had a history of anxiety around other dogs. Kristen had no way of knowing how he would react to sharing his home, and that uncertainty stayed with her right up until the first foster puppy arrived.
Then everything surprised her.
Remi responded in a way Kristen never saw coming, and instead of the nervous reaction she had prepared herself for, she got to see a side of him she had never witnessed before.
A Surprising Bond With Foster Puppies
Kristen had always felt a strong calling to help dogs who had been abandoned or were in unfortunate circumstances. After learning about fostering opportunities with PJ’s Rescue in Duluth, Minnesota, she saw it as the perfect chance to make a difference.
Despite her excitement, she was unsure of how Remi would react to the presence of other dogs in their home. While he was loving and affectionate with people, he had always seemed uneasy around other dogs.
Kristen initially thought Remi would be her only dog for the foreseeable future, until she decided to try fostering.
To her surprise, when the first foster puppy walked into their home, Remi displayed an entirely different side of himself. Instead of being anxious or territorial, he immediately took on the role of a caring older sibling.
Remi’s Incredible Big Brother Role
Rather than showing any signs of stress, Remi’s patience and kindness shone through. He seemed to understand that the puppies needed reassurance, and he provided it in abundance.
“He has been the best foster brother to these puppies who come to us needing a safe place and to feel wanted,” Kristen said.
Even more heartwarming, the puppies quickly grew fond of him. They followed him everywhere, mimicking his every move and even picking up some of his unique behaviors, like his signature way of sitting with his legs outstretched.
Remi quickly became an exemplary role model for the puppies, always gentle in play and careful with his actions. Over time, the pups trusted him so much that they would even nuzzle into his mouth as he yawned, something Remi didn’t mind at all.
The Perfect Team
Kristen couldn’t imagine the fostering journey without her loving companion by her side.
“3 years ago today, I adopted my best friend. It was the best decision I’ve ever made. I love this big cuddly baby more than words,” Kristen wrote on Facebook.
Remi not only changed Kristen’s life but also made the fostering experience more fulfilling and enjoyable. Together, they have provided countless puppies with the safe and loving start they needed.
