Losing a dog leaves an ache that words can barely describe. When a beloved furry friend vanishes, the silence left behind can be unbearable.
For Shamantha Powers, an Indiana woman, that became her reality the day her sweet boy Loki disappeared. Her heart shattered instantly, and despite endless searching, every lead came up empty.
Nearly two years passed, and Powers finally gave up hope. But then…
When Hope Slipped Away
The day she realized she would not find Loki was one of the hardest of her life. From the moment he went missing, she searched everywhere and posted on every site she could think of, hoping for even the smallest clue.
“As soon as I got home I searched high and low, posted on all social media platforms.. PetSmart, lost animals, Pet finder, Craigslist, all the things I could possibly think of, all with no luck! ” Powers wrote on Facebook.
With each passing day, the chances of seeing Loki again seemed smaller and smaller. Eventually, she stopped believing their paths would ever cross.
Then, one phone call turned everything upside down.
The Miracle Call
The staff at Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control in Indiana reached out with the news she never thought she’d hear.
Loki had been found after escaping the person who’d been caring for him during this time.
When he arrived at the facility, he was scanned for a microchip. The unmistakable “beep” confirmed it was him, and it led straight back to his true family.
“We were able to contact his owner and that is when we found out she had been missing him for almost 2 years and could not contain her excitement that we had her baby,” FWACC wrote in a Facebook statement.
For Powers, the words felt unreal, like something out of a dream. After so long without him, she was finally going to see her boy again.
“After searching endlessly for him I kinda lost hope. Until I got the phone call yesterday that they found my boy. I can’t begin to explain the overflow of emotions I am going through,” she added in another post.
When Powers arrived at the shelter, staff walked Loki out on a leash and waited for him to recognize her. It only took a moment.
Then, with a rush of joy, he leapt and wiggled with happiness, unable to hold back his excitement. His boundless energy filled the room, and there wasn’t a dry eye around. Loki knew immediately: his momma had come back.
There she was, right in front of him after all this time.
Powers and Loki clung to each other, making up for every lost day with hugs and kisses. Two years apart had finally ended, and nothing would separate them again.
After leaving the shelter, they returned home to start fresh. It took Loki a few days to readjust to his old surroundings, but once he settled in, he was happier than ever.
Now, he and his momma are ready for whatever comes next. This time, they’ll face it side by side.
