Abandoning a pet is one of the coldest things a person can do. When animals are left behind like that, they are thrown straight into danger and forced to survive with almost nothing.
That was the reality for one tiny puppy in Missouri.
He was found near a public dumpster, tied to a fence with only a shoestring. Instead of safety, he had a worn-out couch beneath him and a frightening world passing by in front of him.
He sat there trembling, looking up at strangers as they walked past, quietly seeming to hope that one of them might stop and show him a little kindness.
Most did not.
But one woman could not keep walking. There was something in the puppy’s eyes that stayed with her, a sadness too heavy to ignore. The moment she saw him, she knew she had to step in and help.
Alone And Vulnerable Near A Dumpster
The woman had simply been taking out her trash when she stumbled upon the abandoned dog. Unable to walk away, she immediately called Stray Rescue of Saint Louis for help.
While waiting for assistance, she stayed by the puppy’s side, offering him the comfort of not being alone any longer.
It was unclear how the puppy ended up tied to the fence by the dumpster, clearly abandoned by those who had left him behind. He appeared dazed and wore a profoundly sad expression.
Shivering with fear and uncertainty, the puppy found solace only when the kind stranger stayed by his side, offering warmth and companionship.
Stray Rescue Comes To The Rescue
Soon, the Stray Rescue team arrived to take the puppy to safety. They named him Shoestring, a bittersweet tribute to the item that had been used to tie him up.
Natalie Thompson, a member of the SRST staff, mentioned that Shoestring was incredibly anxious upon arrival and needed a calm, soothing approach to feel comfortable and secure.
Despite his initial fear, Shoestring’s loving and affectionate personality began to emerge, showing that, deep down, he was a sweet and gentle dog.
“A sweet lady found him and stayed with him until we arrived. We named him….Shoestring. He’s scared (rightfully so!) but VERY sweet,” the SRST team shared on their official Facebook page.
Shoestring’s Journey To Healing
After his arrival at the rescue facility, Shoestring received a full veterinary examination and was given food and care. Volunteers quickly surrounded him with love and attention.
Gradually, the puppy began to relax, seeking affection from anyone who offered it. He snuggled into the arms of the volunteers, his sad eyes softening with each moment of comfort.
Because the shelter was at capacity, Shoestring was placed in a foster home to recover and wait for his neutering appointment before being listed for adoption.
The rescue team noted that his ideal home would have a resident dog to keep him company, as Shoestring seemed to thrive with canine companions. They were hopeful that a family with patience and love would soon come forward to make him part of their forever home.
With a loving environment and the right companion, they believed Shoestring would blossom into a happy, well-adjusted dog.
By now, Shoestring has likely found a family that gives him the safety, love, and joy he so desperately needed.
