It is truly sad to see so many helpless animals left on the street to fend for themselves. Yet, it is even more heartbreaking when people have no empathy for those poor beings and turn their heads whenever they see them.
Fortunately, there are exceptions in the form of good souls who are sometimes willing to risk their own lives in order to save theirs. Shannon Mortlock, an animal advocate and the founder of Whisker Woods Sanctuary, shows that every day with her good deeds.
One day, after she pulled a wombat off the road, she continued on her way to save other lives. However, while she was driving, Shannon saw two red objects on the road.
At first, she was convinced that it was trash but decided to take a closer look. Shannon soon realized that it wasn’t trash after all and her heart broke at the sight.
Poor Little Creature
When Shannon took a closer look from her car, she realized it wasn’t trash on the road but an injured bird and her confused mate standing right next to her, not being able to do anything to help her.
Shannon was totally heartbroken because of this sight, but she managed to pull herself together rather quickly and jumped out of the car to help them.
“I panicked a little because there [were] so many trucks and cars on the highway,” Shannon said in her interview for The Dodo. “I was hoping I could get to them in time.”
When she finally came closer, Shannon saw that those were birds that belonged to the crimson rosella species. Sadly, the mate flew away as soon as she approached them, but luckily, she was able to help the female bird.
Shannon gently took the poor bird in her arms and immediately transferred her to the car. Soon, the little animal was on her way to safety.
Back Where She Belongs
Shannon suspected that the injured bird had suffered a concussion so she decided to care for her overnight until she felt better.
The very next day, this bird’s condition rapidly improved so there was no need for her to stay in Shannon’s care anymore. This woman immediately conducted flying tests in order to examine the bird’s capability.
When she was convinced that the bird could fly without any problems, Shannon took her to a place where she could be reunited with her mate.
“I took them back to the tree where I saw their partner fly up into yesterday and …you’ll see the rest in the video,” Shannon wrote in the caption.
It was truly the happiest ending as this bird was back where she belonged — back into the wild and reunited with her mate.
“I’m so glad I saw them on the road yesterday and stopped, a wonderful outcome for 2 lovebirds,” Shannon wrote in the end. “Another successful release 💕”
