Even the most resilient animals sometimes need help.
Life on the streets can be tough and unpredictable, and while many animals survive on their own or with the kindness of strangers, there are moments when only humans can make the difference between life and death.
Thankfully, there are people who act without hesitation to give helpless animals the chance at the safe and loving lives they deserve.
A Cry For Help In The Drain
While taking out the trash one day in Austin, Texas, Cassie Jo noticed a strange sound coming from nearby.
When she stopped to listen closely, she realized it was the desperate cries of a puppy. Following the sound, she discovered a small Jack Russell tangled in chicken wire and trapped deep inside a storm drain.
Cassie immediately contacted her apartment maintenance team for help. They tried their best to free the pup, but despite their efforts, the little dog remained stuck.
She then called the local citizen hotline, only to be told that assistance could take between 24 and 48 hours.
Unwilling to wait that long, Cassie reached out to the Austin Fire Department for urgent help.
A Brave Rescue
The Austin Fire Department quickly arrived at the scene, bringing their rescue equipment and determination.
“The puppy, who we now call Poinsettia, kept slipping deeper into the drain until one firefighter bravely climbed down and managed to rescue her,” wrote Austin Pets Alive on Facebook.
Once Poinsettia was safely out, she was taken to the Austin Animal Center and then transferred to Austin Pets Alive (APA!) for medical care.
“Poinsettia was safe, but her battle was far from over. After making it to Austin Animal Center, she started having seizures. Now, Poinsettia is fighting to live under the care of our medical team – and we’re fighting right along with her. But we can only do it with your help!” they stated.
Poinsettia was placed on medication to manage her seizures and given antibiotics to treat infections.
Although rescuers worried about a possible leg injury, the veterinary team confirmed that she showed no signs of pain or limping.
With her health stabilizing, Poinsettia was finally safe and beginning to recover.
