In all my years writing about abandoned dogs, I’ve heard of people leaving them along roadsides, tying them to posts, or even dropping them in boxes.
But I’ve never come across someone cruel enough to trap a litter of puppies in a plastic container that made it nearly impossible for them to breathe, move, or escape.
This story tells of a heartbreaking moment when newborn pups were left inside a sealed container with little hope of survival.
A Devastating Discovery
It was just another morning for Amanda Hood when she noticed something unusual on the lawn in front of her workplace.
At first glance, she thought it might be a donation, but then she took a closer look at the plastic container and saw movement inside.
Hood decided to check it out, and as she approached, she noticed a hole had been drilled into the box, and condensation had formed inside.
Her heart dropped when she saw what was really inside: eleven tiny puppies crammed into the plastic container.
No one at her workplace had any idea how the puppies got there, but it seemed clear someone had abandoned them, not caring whether they survived.
Hood said to The Dodo: They were probably only there for an hour or so. Because with those two tiny holes for ventilation, I don’t think they would’ve made it for much longer.
Giving The Puppies A Chance
Knowing the puppies couldn’t stay, Hood brought them to the Humane Society, where staff could care for them.
They were estimated to be about five weeks old and appeared to be in good health. After their checkups, they settled into a cozy area at the shelter.
Hood said: They eat, sleep and like to be held. They’re the sweetest babies.
But soon, another issue came up. The Calhoun County Humane Society, where they had been taken, was already at full capacity and couldn’t house so many puppies.
To ensure they had the best shot at a good life, the puppies were sent to Forever Home Dog Rescue, in Illinois, where they could be placed in foster homes.
While the situation looked bleak at first, there’s no doubt these sweet pups will end up in loving homes where they’ll be cherished and cared for.
