Woman In Oregon Spots Odd Box At Bus Stop, Sees Something Inside, And Calls Police

We all wish every dog could live in a cozy home with kind people who would never hurt them.

Sadly, reality often paints a different picture. Many animals, including pets, face abuse, neglect, and abandonment, no matter their age or breed.

That’s why we continue to see dogs discarded and left to survive on the streets. Even the tiniest pups aren’t spared from this cruelty.

One woman walking past a bus stop in Springfield, Oregon learned this firsthand when she noticed something strange beside her.

Heartbreaking Contents Of The Box

When the woman noticed the suspicious box, she stepped closer to investigate. She was stunned to see a tiny head poking out, prompting her to call the police right away.

According to the Facebook post of the Springfield Police Department, six puppies, likely just a few weeks old, were found inside a box that “had been taped completely closed.”

Officers reported the box had no ventilation, and there was no “food, water, or attempt to keep the puppies warm.”

The fragile pups were immediately taken to Springfield Animal Control. They weren’t there long before staff  of Greenhill Humane Society in Eugene, Oregon took over their care.

Shelter workers sprang into action to help the puppies recover, while police began looking into who was responsible.

Police Track Down The Suspect And Make Arrest

It didn’t take long to uncover the culprit, as the box still had a shipping label addressed to a man named Jeff Dugger.

According to KEZI, when the police continued to investigate, they also found out that this 72-year-old man “had called Greenhill about 24 hours before the box was found and threatened to dispose of them if the humane society did not take them in immediately.”

That information was confirmed by Kelly Fleischmann, Greenhill Humane Society’s community engagement manager. It was enough to arrest Jeffery Lynn Dugger, who was charged with six counts of animal abandonment and cruelty.

But justice wasn’t the only victory. The puppies also bounced back quickly, bringing joy to everyone involved in their rescue and care.

“We’re delighted to be able to say those puppies are thriving,” Kelly happily stated, adding that they will soon be ready for adoption.

In the end, the kindhearted people came out on top, and those responsible faced the consequences.
