Stray dogs wander day after day, searching for shelter and something to eat. Their lives are filled with fear, danger, and unpredictability.
Some end up in areas so hazardous and isolated that they’re left with no way to survive.
Weak and exhausted, Miley lay silently in the grass off a busy highway, waiting for someone kind to notice her.
Kindness Arrives Just in Time

In July 2023, Stray Rescue of St. Louis received multiple calls about a stray dog lying by the highway.
Once one caller provided an exact mile marker, the rescue team knew where to go.
Fearing the dog might flee in panic, Donna Lochmann rushed to the location.
She arrived at the spot and immediately saw the scared pup curled up in the grass. Her heart sank at the sight of the dog’s thin frame and weary eyes.
Not wanting to frighten her further, Lochmann slowly moved down the slope. The dog stared at her sadly.
Speaking gently and offering treats, Lochmann tried to earn her trust.
Grateful To Be Saved

The lonely pup seemed to sense the kindness and began to wag her tail. She appeared relieved that someone finally cared enough to stop and help.
She was later given the name Miley Marker.
Miley allowed Lochmann to place a leash around her neck. When she tried to stand, her legs trembled, and she collapsed back down.
Seeing her so frail was heartbreaking.
As Lochmann moved closer to pick her up, Miley surprised her with a kiss.
While being carried up the steep slope, she continued to shower her rescuer with kisses, showing her gratitude in the only way she could.
At Stray Rescue of St. Louis, Miley underwent a full medical exam. Her caregivers were devastated to learn she was sick and had likely eaten anything she could find just to survive.
Lochmann gave her a bath to clear away the fleas, and Miley didn’t waste any time giving her another kiss.

Miley’s caregivers believed she would recover fully. Despite her harsh past, she was very affectionate, winning over everyone she met.
They showered her with love and hugs, and Miley felt safe and cherished like never before.
A New Chapter In Miley’s Life

Soon, Miley was ready for foster care and a new chapter in life.
Her foster family welcomed her into their St. Louis home, helping her regain strength. They gave her a red fish toy, which Miley carried everywhere with joy.
She took time to rest and catch up on sleep. Before long, she started enjoying the comfort and warmth of her loving home, becoming more energetic every day.
Her foster family adored her.
“Miley is the sweetest, most loving (and goofy) girl. When I am on Zoom meetings for work, Miley usually dozes off at my feet. She will suddenly wake up, jump into my lap at full speed, and start licking my face incessantly,” said Rachel, her foster mom.
Ready For Her Forever Family

Her foster mom shared that Miley’s behavior was her way of showing gratitude. This sweet pup was overjoyed to have been saved.
Miley has made a full recovery and, at the time of this article, is searching for her forever home.
We are confident that a pup as loving as Miley will soon find wonderful parents who will cherish her endlessly.
