We’ve all had that strange moment when something appears at our door that we never ordered. But for one rescuer in Ohio, that experience took an unexpected and emotional turn.
One evening, while Kay Banks, founder of Tabby Tails Cat Rescue, was in the shower, a phone notification suddenly popped up. Her home security camera had detected motion outside the front door.
Curious and a bit uneasy, Kay quickly dried off and hurried to check. A few packages were stacked neatly on her porch, but something about the small black bag on top immediately caught her attention.
An Unsettling Discovery

As Kay bent down to inspect the bag, she noticed something that made her heart stop. Staring back at her from inside were a pair of glowing eyes.
It wasn’t a package at all. It was a terrified orange cat.
Someone had zipped the poor feline inside a carrier bag and abandoned him outside in the rain.
“He was very terrified. He was crying the whole time on our camera. Physically he’s in OK condition. It was obvious he was a pet,” Kay told The Dodo.

Without hesitation, Kay brought the bag inside, gently unzipped it, and tried to coax the frightened cat out. But he wasn’t ready to trust anyone yet.
After being discarded by his former owners, the confused cat needed time to adjust and understand that he was finally safe.
Helping Jackson Feel Safe Again
Kay decided to give him space to decompress. She set up a comfortable kennel for him and began the slow process of building trust.
But it wasn’t easy.
The cat, later identified as Jackson, reacted with fear and aggression. Each time Kay opened the kennel door to feed him or clean, he would hiss, scratch, and retreat.
Still, Kay refused to give up.
Over the next several days, she spent quiet time near the kennel, speaking softly so Jackson could get used to her presence and scent. Bit by bit, he began to realize she wasn’t there to hurt him.
Kay shared updates about Jackson’s progress on TikTok, where many followers expressed concern and empathy. Some suggested his extreme behavior might have been linked to trauma or pain.
“Jackson is acting very extreme, but this actually isn’t something that is super uncommon. The truth of the matter is that being surrendered is one of the scariest and most terrifying things your pets could ever go through. And it’s not uncommon for your pets to become so scared, become so stressed, and become so depressed that they act like this,” Kay explained in a video.
A Plea to Stop Abandoning Animals

As Jackson’s story spread, Kay used the opportunity to speak about a larger issue—people leaving animals outside rescue centers without permission.
“Please stop leaving cats here without our permission. Abusing the generosity of rescues and shelters puts these animals at risk. I don’t close our intake for fun. I close it because we don’t have enough food to feed an extra mouth. We don’t have funds to care for their medical needs, and because we don’t have the time or space for another cat,” she wrote in a heartfelt Facebook post.
She went on to explain that rescues operate with limited resources, and surprise drop-offs can overwhelm already strained systems.
“If we had an infinite amount of resources, you better believe I’d be trying my best to save every baby. But that’s unfortunately not the case,” she added.
A Future Filled With Hope
Despite his rough start, Jackson is slowly learning that not all humans are cruel. With Kay’s compassion and patience, he’s beginning to relax and show glimpses of the affectionate cat hiding beneath the fear.
Each day brings a little more progress—a tentative look, a softer meow, or a moment of calm.
In time, Jackson will come to understand that he no longer has anything to fear and that his rescuer will never abandon him.
