Mississippi Woman Pulls Over For A Furry Shape And Finds A Family Begging For Mercy

No dog should ever have to feel even a little sadness, much less go through what one brave mama dog endured.

At the very moment she needed care, safety, and kindness the most, she was left beside a road with her tiny newborn puppies.

Heartbroken but still determined to protect them, the mother dog curled her paws around her babies, doing everything she could to keep them safe from harm.

People passed by without realizing they were there, but she kept holding on to hope. Somewhere in her heart, she seemed to believe that someone kind would eventually stop, notice her, and help bring her little family to safety.

Stopping For A Roadside Discovery

Valerie Hicks was on her way to Community Animal Rescue & Adoption (CARA)where she serves as board president, when something unusual caught her eye.

On the side of the road, an open crate held what appeared to be a curled-up furry figure. Hicks pulled over immediately and discovered it was an abandoned dog.

Moving closer, she realized the heartbreaking reality. Inside the crate with the mother were seven tiny newborn puppies, huddled together for warmth.

Her heart sank further when she noticed that an eighth puppy had not survived.

The mother dog, later named Mama Evelyn, looked up with sorrowful eyes that seemed to silently beg for help.

Hicks contacted her rescue partner, Christina, and offered comfort to the distressed mother. Although Evelyn was still nervous, she gradually began to sense that Hicks meant no harm.

“Mom was very nervous, maybe the saddest eyes I’ve ever seen. But at the same time, she seemed very grateful,” Hicks told The Dodo.

At CARA, the staff prepared a quiet and safe space for the family to rest and start the healing process.

Healing And Thriving

Not long after, the shelter found a foster family ready to care for Mama Evelyn and her tiny puppies. She dedicated herself entirely to nursing them and attending to all their needs.

“This girl is one of the best moms ever. The puppies are pretty robust and seem healthy, and they nurse almost constantly. When not nursing, they are in complete milk comas,” CARA shared on Facebook.

Although the ordeal had made her cautious around humans, Evelyn gradually began to rebuild her trust thanks to the consistent love and attention she received in her foster home.

With that ongoing care, her gentle and affectionate nature started to emerge more clearly.

The shelter staff were thrilled to see the puppies making steady progress. Each little pup treasures every moment with their mother as they continue growing stronger and healthier each day.

Soon, the dog family will travel to CARA’s foster-based rescue partner in Maine, where they will start their journey toward finding their own place in the world.

I hope that Mama Evelyn and her puppies soon discover forever families who
