Even the most independent animals sometimes need a helping hand.
Life on the streets can be harsh and dangerous, and while some animals manage on their own or with the help of others, there are times when only humans can step in.
Fortunately, many people are willing to do whatever it takes to give these animals the safe, loving lives they deserve.
Urgent Help Needed

While taking out the trash in Austin, Texas, Cassie Jo heard something unusual.
After stopping to listen, she realized it was the cries of a puppy. Investigating further, she discovered a tiny Jack Russell tangled in chicken wire, trapped in a storm drain.
She immediately contacted her apartment maintenance team to try to free the pup. Despite their efforts, they were unable to get her out.
When she called the local citizen hotline, she was told help could take 24 to 48 hours. Not willing to wait that long, she reached out to the Austin Fire Department.
Rescue Team Is On The Way
The Austin Fire Department quickly gathered their equipment and rushed to the scene.
“The puppy, who we now call Poinsettia, kept slipping deeper into the drain until one firefighter bravely climbed down and managed to rescue her,” wrote Austin Pets Alive on Facebook.

Once freed, Poinsettia was taken to the Austin Animal Center and then transferred to Austin Pets Alive (APA!) for a medical evaluation.
“Poinsettia was safe, but her battle was far from over. After making it to Austin Animal Center, she started having seizures. Now, Poinsettia is fighting to live under the care of our medical team – and we’re fighting right along with her. But we can only do it with your help!” they stated.
She was put on medication to control her seizures and antibiotics to treat infections.

Although there were concerns about a potential leg injury, the medical team confirmed she showed no signs of pain or limping.
Finally, Poinsettia was safe and beginning her recovery. With initial care costs estimated at $500, the Austin shelter reminded supporters of the crucial role donations play.

“With the month of December already halfway through, your support is urgently needed to help pets like Poinsettia battle whatever comes their way. Don’t forget, your gift is MATCHED up to $100,000 right now! Will you help pets like her today – and have your gift generously doubled?” they said.
Anyone wishing to help can donate to the cause and support animals like Poinsettia.
