You don’t have to be a pet owner to feel for a dog that’s been left behind. But for those who have experienced that bond, the pain of abandonment cuts even deeper.
While out on her regular lunchtime walk with her three dogs in Houston, Texas, Tina Holland stumbled upon something that caught her eye — just feet from a busy road.
It was a cardboard box near a dumpster. Inside were a toy and a pee pad, and next to it lay a tiny, helpless puppy crawling on her belly.
Holland acted quickly, rushing over to help.
Her Heart Sank At The Sight

It was immediately clear to Holland what had happened. The box full of puppy items told the story. The little dog had been intentionally abandoned.
What baffled her was why anyone would do such a thing.
Worse still, the puppy couldn’t stop shaking. She was completely defenseless and alone, left with nothing but a toy and a street curb.

Holland wasted no time. She gently scooped the puppy into her sweatshirt to warm her up, and it worked.
Seeing her nestled into the cozy hoodie was both adorable and heartbreaking. For perhaps the first time, she looked peaceful.
Back at the office, Holland gave her some water and showered her with love. She checked her over for injuries and was relieved to find that she seemed healthy.

Knowing the pup needed more than she could give, Holland contacted Dawgs Fight Back, a rescue based in New Hampshire. Soon, the little pup, now named Peeka, was safely on her way to their care.
“She is the sweetest 10 week old pup. She was left in box next to a dumpster in Houston last week. Luckily she was found by a sweet person who loves animals,” DFB wrote on Facebook.
Ready To Begin Again

Peeka, a Pittie mix, had a loving nature that shined through right away.
Despite everything she’d been through, she adored cuddling and got along with everyone, humans and animals alike, making her a wonderful choice for adoption.
“We think she is a pittie mix and has the sweetest little green eyes. She loves cuddles and other animals. She is ready for adoption,” the rescue concluded.

For now, Peeka is still with the rescue, learning what it means to be a dog. She’s blending in wonderfully with other dogs and has a cheerful, easygoing spirit.
All she needs now is a family to love her and never leave her behind. Peeka is sure to bring joy to any home lucky enough to adopt her.
She’s ready for love, and she deserves it.
