Woman Discovers Shocking Breed After Testing Her Oregon Shelter Dog’s DNA

When thinking about getting a dog, we often have certain perceptions of how our future four-legged friend will look.

Poodle enthusiasts see their pups as big, fashionable, city bois and girls. Malinois lovers unmistakably perceive their pups as strong athletes with endless stamina. And Border Collie admirers? They just know their pups will be high-energy furballs with long, rough coats.

Raquel, a woman who recently adopted a Border Collie, thought so too. But when she finally brought Belinda, her Collie, home from an Oregon shelter, something didn’t seem right. So, she decided to DNA test her. The result ultimately left her stunned!

The Results Are Stunning

From the moment Raquel laid eyes on Belinda, she knew: this pup was meant to be. The bond was formed immediately, and the two couldn’t wait to start a new chapter together.

Belinda was brought to Herding Dog Rescue in Oregon after being found in the middle of nowhere as a stray. As her owners were never found, this sweet girl was placed for adoption — with Raquel being the ideal fit.

While her new owner didn’t expect Belinda to exhibit her Collie traits right away, she knew that the dog’s high-energy spirit and the Collie look would surface eventually. But when that didn’t happen, Raquel began to wonder.

Already wanting to DNA test Belinda to find information about her health history, Raquel felt this was the perfect time to test her breed, too.

The result, however, left her truly shocked!

As it turned out, Belinda, who had a short, smooth coat and calm demeanor, was, in fact, a purebred Border Collie.

“I adopted my dog 4 weeks ago and tested her predisposition for diseases and personality traits. However, we weren’t expecting that she would be a pure breed border collie because of her short coat,” Raquel wrote in the Reddit post.

The owner even began to wonder if the DNA test was reliable, sparking a discussion among Collie owners on Reddit. Eventually, the “truth” was revealed.

“Border collies come in two coat options! Rough coat and smooth coats! There are plenty with short hair,” one user wrote.

“They come in so many shapes, sizes, cord and coats! My boy is bigger and has a rough, curly coat,” another explained.

Feeling Lucky To Have Found Belinda

Thanks to hundreds of comments related to her post, Raquel’s doubts vanished. Not familiar with the breed’s full characteristics before, the owner ultimately learned that everything about her dog’s physical appearance was within a Collie standard.

“I learned so much about BC just by reading the discussions here. I appreciate your time in explaining the differences between smooth and long coat BC.

Raquel could not have been happier to have found such a friendly dog like Belinda.

It’s a very friendly breed and I feel so lucky to have found such a cute girl,” Raquel wrote.

Now that she knows her better, their bond has become even stronger. There’s no doubt that many adventures await this duo, and I can’t wait to see their next update!
