For one New York City woman, fostering a dog had always been a dream close to her heart. Heather Hamm, a jewelry designer and photographer, grew up with dogs and had long hoped to foster one of her own someday.
Then, one night, while casually scrolling through Instagram, a post made her stop in her tracks.
An Instagram page known for sharing free furniture sightings across the city had posted something very different — a photo of a dog, tied to a pole at a subway station, completely alone and abandoned.
Heather knew in that moment — this was her sign.
A Moment Of Fate
Just before seeing the post, Heather had been browsing online from her NYC apartment, hoping to find a pup to foster. But when the photo of the dog popped up, her heart skipped a beat.
“Someone just tied this dog to a pole at a subway stop,” the Nycfreecurb team wrote on Instagram.
Without a detailed plan or even knowing exactly what to expect, Heather hailed a cab and rushed toward the location. She was filled with nerves as this would be her first time trying to rescue a dog.
But when she arrived, her worries vanished.
The dog, clearly overjoyed to see her, wagged her tail excitedly and greeted Heather with warmth and affection. It was as if she knew she’d been saved.
Grateful and relieved, the dog immediately snuggled into Heather’s arms and showered her with licks — a heart-melting thank-you to her rescuer.
Those who had seen the original post online were left wondering about the dog’s fate… until Heather left a simple but powerful comment:
“She’s coming with me tonight,” she wrote under Nycfreecurb’s post.
The Best Stoop Find Yet
Heather later named the dog Peaches — and the sweet pup quickly found comfort in her rescuer’s arms. After checking in with local authorities, Heather got the green light from NYPD to bring Peaches home.
That’s when their real journey began.
The bond between them formed instantly. Peaches was gentle, well-mannered, and incredibly loving.
She already knew a few commands, loved chasing after a ball, and lit up with joy during walks to the park. And when it came to toys, stuffies were her absolute favorite.
Having Peaches around felt like a blessing. Despite being abandoned so cruelly, she was now thriving in a safe and loving environment, and Heather couldn’t have been more thankful for the experience.
In time, Peaches found her forever home!
Heather later shared a joyful update in the comments, letting everyone know that Peaches was adopted and living her best life:
“She’s doing wonderful! She’s been adopted recently and is getting absolutely spoiled in her new home,” she wrote.
From being left alone on the cold city streets to becoming a cherished family member, Peaches is now living the joyful life she always deserved.
