It was just an ordinary day for Heather Tolaro when her friend called to say she had found a stray dog near her home in Illinois.
She told Heather the pup had a rope tied around her neck. Because she was allergic to dogs, she couldn’t keep her, so she asked Heather to take her in until they could learn more.
As soon as Heather heard what had happened, she went to meet her friend and the sweet pup at her house to see how she could help.
Bella Star’s Heartbreaking Story
When Heather and her daughter arrived to meet the adorable pup, she was surprised by how happy and friendly she seemed.
The dog warmed up to them right away, and at that moment, Heather realized she needed to step in and do something to help her.
The biggest concern was the rope still tied around her neck. They suspected she must have had an owner before.
So, they began searching to see if anyone might be looking for her. She told Newsweek: “We contacted shelters, the police, animal control, and I’ve posted her picture on lost dog pages on community pages.”
The search spread all across Illinois. Heather even checked to see if the pup had a microchip, but no information came up.
Just a few days later, Heather’s mother-in-law saw a video of a dog being thrown out of a car, and she was shocked. She suspected it was the same dog.
After finding out what Bella Star had been through, Heather decided to keep her and give her a home.
She said: “It’s weird, and I don’t really understand it, but it’s as if we’ve had for her entire life. She is fully trained; she sleeps in the bed with us; she gets excited for car rides, excited for walks. I don’t understand.”

From the very first moment, Bella Star felt safe and comfortable in Heather’s care, and it’s clear they were meant to find each other.

It was certainly an interesting idea, and it might explain why she felt so secure with Heather. Perhaps she had escaped a life of abuse.
