Stray dogs wander endlessly, searching for food, water, and a safe place to rest. Their days are filled with uncertainty, danger, and loneliness.
Some end up in areas so perilous and remote that survival seems impossible.
Weak and weary, a dog named Miley lay quietly in the tall grass off a busy Missouri highway, hoping that someone kind would finally notice her.
Compassion Stops Just In Time

Stray Rescue of St. Louis began receiving several reports about a stray dog spotted lying near the highway.
Once a caller provided a precise mile marker, the rescue team knew exactly where to head.
Fearing the frightened dog might run if startled, rescuer Donna Lochmann hurried to the scene.
When she arrived, she saw the small, terrified dog curled up in the grass. The sight of her thin body and sad eyes broke her heart.
Donna approached slowly, careful not to scare her. The dog watched nervously as she spoke softly and offered some treats.
A Heart That Still Trusted

The lonely pup seemed to recognize kindness when she saw it. Her tail began to wag, and she looked visibly relieved to be noticed and cared for.
Rescuers later named her Miley Marker.
Miley allowed Donna to slip a leash around her neck. When she tried to stand, her frail legs gave way, and she fell back down. It was painful to see her so weak.
As Donna leaned closer to lift her up, Miley gently reached out and gave her a kiss. Even as she was carried up the steep slope, Miley kept giving small kisses to her rescuer, a silent thank-you to the person who had saved her life.
At the Stray Rescue of St. Louis facility, Miley received a full medical evaluation. Her condition revealed how hard she had fought to survive, eating whatever she could find.
Donna gave her a bath to remove the fleas, and once again, Miley responded with another affectionate kiss.

Despite her hardships, Miley proved to be an incredibly loving dog. Everyone who met her instantly fell in love with her gentle, grateful spirit.
With the warmth and attention of the rescue team, Miley began to heal, both physically and emotionally.
A Bright New Beginning

Before long, Miley was strong enough to move into foster care and start her next chapter.
Her foster family in St. Louis welcomed her with open arms and helped her continue her recovery. They gave her a red fish toy, which quickly became her favorite possession. She carried it everywhere she went.
At last, Miley could rest peacefully, surrounded by comfort and safety. As the days passed, she regained her strength and playful energy, transforming into a happy and curious dog.
Her foster mom, Rachel, quickly grew attached to her.
“Miley is the sweetest, most loving (and goofy) girl. When I am on Zoom meetings for work, Miley usually dozes off at my feet. She will suddenly wake up, jump into my lap at full speed, and start licking my face incessantly,” Rachel said.
Hoping For Her Forever Home

Rachel shared that Miley’s affectionate behavior is her way of saying thank you for being rescued.
Now fully recovered, Miley is waiting for the perfect family to give her a forever home.
There is no doubt that a dog as loving and resilient as Miley will soon find someone who will adore her endlessly.
If you’re ready to welcome a loyal companion into your life, reach out to Stray Rescue of St. Louis and meet Miley. She’ll return your kindness with unconditional love and endless gratitude.
