For Leilani Slocumb, the September morning felt no different from the rest. Once she left her children at school, she drove home thinking the day would unfold as usual.
But as she approached her front door in Georgia, something made her stop in astonishment.
Curled up on her doormat was a stray dog, staring up at her with eyes full of hope and desperation.
A Plea For Kindness
As Slocumb stepped closer, she quickly realized this unexpected visitor was in rough shape.
The thin, weary dog had chosen her doorstep as his final chance at help. His fragile body and tired expression revealed just how much he had endured. Later on, she would decide to name him Bo.
Startled at first, Bo rose and cautiously backed into the yard. Slocumb did not want to frighten him, so she quietly placed a bowl of food on the ground.
Hungry and drained, Bo ate every bit before lifting his head to meet her gaze as if thanking her.
That small act of compassion was enough to begin earning his trust. He stayed near the house, watching as her husband and stepdaughter gently bathed him while Slocumb called to arrange a vet visit.

Sadly, the truth was far different. His former owners explained that they no longer wanted him. They had given him away six months earlier to someone whose name they could not even recall.
Bo had been abandoned twice, yet he remained gentle and willing to trust again.

Once Slocumb learned no one was coming forward for Bo, her choice became clear. She brought him back home to stay.
“After a long day, we went home and Bo rolled straight in the dirt and was the happiest he has been since he’s been with us. He knows he is home now,” she wrote.
