You think you know someone, and then you discover you were wrong the whole time. What a shock.
That’s exactly what happened to Kaylee Leslie, a dog owner from Virginia, after she adopted Goose, a pup she believed to be a Golden Retriever.
Goose came into Leslie’s life from a Texas rescue, and he quickly became her loyal companion. Everything about him seemed golden until curiosity led her to order a DNA test. The results told a very different story.
A Golden Deceiver?

Meet Goose, the sweetest “Golden Deceiver” anyone could imagine.
Of course, Goose himself had nothing to do with the mix-up. To Leslie, he was always her golden boy, but in reality, his DNA told a very different story.
Her first doubts surfaced at a grooming appointment, when one of the groomers noticed something unusual: Goose had a black tongue, a trait often found in Chow Chows.
“When I brought him in, the one girl said ‘Is he a pure Golden?’ To which I replied that since he’s a rescue we aren’t 100% certain but we are almost sure he’s at least 90% Golden from his looks/temperament,” Leslie explained in a Reddit post.

At first, Leslie didn’t feel the need to prove it. Goose was everything she wanted: sweet, goofy, affectionate, and gentle with strangers. But eventually, she grew curious enough to order a DNA test.
The results showed that Goose wasn’t a Golden Retriever at all.
“This is Goose! Our golden deceiver who we totally thought was mostly Golden Retriever,” Leslie added in another post.
A Surprising Mix

The test revealed Goose’s ancestry: a mix of German Shepherd, Beagle, Chow Chow, American Pit Bull Terrier, Labrador Retriever, and a category known as “Supermutt.”
Despite his Golden-like looks, Goose had no Golden Retriever DNA whatsoever.
One Hundred Percent Golden Boy

Although the discovery was unexpected, Leslie wasn’t disappointed. For her, Goose was still the perfect companion.
“We’re so surprised! He’s the best. His personality is so golden too which added to our surprise,” she shared.

According to his family, Goose is a complete package. He’s silly, affectionate, quick to learn new tricks, and always ready for zoomies.
He loves the outdoors so much that sometimes it is hard to convince him to come back inside.
The DNA test may have revealed a surprise, but it did not change anything. Goose still thrives with his family, and they love him more than ever.
Golden Retriever or not, Goose is forever his mom’s golden boy.
