Finding the right dog can take time, and for Robin Wagner of Burlington, Vermont, that search stretched on longer than expected. She and her boyfriend visited shelters and rescues again and again, but none of the dogs felt like the one.
Everything shifted when Robin saw Blaze’s adoption profile online. His soft expression and gentle eyes stopped her cold. In that instant, she felt certain he belonged with them.
What she could not have known then was that welcoming Blaze home would uncover challenges they never anticipated.
A Face That Hid More Than It Showed
“We didn’t even know about the teeth before he came home. That was a glorious surprise,” Robin told GeoBeats Animals.
Blaze’s teeth were the first detail that stood out, and they were only the beginning.
The rescue described him as a German Shepherd and Greyhound mix, noting that his eyes looked a bit sunken but assuring Robin that his vision seemed fine.
At first, she trusted that assessment, until subtle signs began to raise concerns.
A visit to a veterinary ophthalmologist finally provided clarity. Blaze could not see out of his right eye, and surgery was needed in hopes of protecting the remaining sight in his left.
The news was heavy, but Robin and her boyfriend never wavered. They were committed to giving Blaze the best life possible, no matter what lay ahead.
“About two weeks post-surgery, I was on a walk with Blaze and he just started to walk into everything. I rushed him back to the ophthalmologist only to find surgery was not successful, and Blaze was now also blind in his left eye,” Robin said.
Eventually, Blaze lost his vision entirely.
Even so, he adapted with an impressive determination, relying on sound, scent, and memory to understand his world. He refused to let the darkness slow him down.
“We had his right eye surgically removed due to repeated infections. And I think I was more put off by the change than he was,” Robin shared.
Building Confidence Without Sight
Obstacles continued to appear, but Blaze met each one with quiet strength.
When he arrived, he weighed just 50 pounds and was far too thin. With proper meals, patience, and steady care, he slowly gained 30 pounds and reached a healthy 80.
Once his body was stronger, Robin focused on his emotional well-being.
“We’re working very closely with a trainer to help Blaze feel a little less apprehensive about the world,” she said.
Without his sight, Blaze felt anxious and easily startled. New noises made him tense, unsure of what might come next.
Robin and her boyfriend spoke to him constantly, narrating their movements and daily routines. Their voices became his guide, offering reassurance as he learned to trust again.
Progress came gradually, but it came.
“Obviously, we didn’t anticipate the number of challenges we would face after we adopted Blaze. But given the chance to do it all over again, I wouldn’t change a thing. He’s my very best friend and I count my lucky stars every single day for him,” Robin said.
Even Satin, the household cat, stepped into an unexpected role. With gentle chirps and soft meows, she helps Blaze move confidently through the house.
“Every time he’d be walking towards her, she would meow. She would meow, and he would stop and redirect himself,” Robin told People.
Satin is not especially affectionate, but her quiet presence makes it clear that she cares in her own way.
