Donna Lochmann has never been the kind of rescuer to turn away when a dog needs help.
Over the years in Missouri, she has made it clear again and again that her devotion runs deep, deep enough to carry her into situations most people would never willingly step into.
Her work has brought her face to face with abandoned animals, brutal conditions, and one urgent plea after another. It is the kind of calling that asks for stamina, compassion, and a strong heart every single time.
Even so, some moments still hit harder than others.
One of those came on a day when Donna entered a house that was falling apart and found a mother dog there with her puppies.
Inside the weak shelter of those broken walls, they were holding on, barely protected, doing their best to survive.
A Family Trapped In Filth And Fear

Seeing a single dog struggle to survive is painful enough. Finding an entire family trapped in squalor is even more devastating.
So when Donna and her team from Stray Rescue of St. Louis received a report about a mother dog inside a deserted home, they didn’t hesitate.
“We walk in the entryway, where a front door used to be. We see a mama dog, staring at us. She barks, her ribs and spine showing, and runs out the back door,” SRSL wrote in a YouTube video.
What they didn’t yet realize was just how unstable the structure truly was.

Inside, the house was filled with rotting garbage and broken debris. Rusted nails jutted from the floorboards, and every step required caution.
Amid the silence, Donna heard faint whimpers coming from below. The sounds led to the basement, but the staircase was barely intact.
Still, she pressed on. As she attempted to descend, the weakened steps gave way. She slipped through, catching herself on the wall before dropping into the pitch-black basement.
There, she found what she had come for.

Five small puppies were scattered in corners, trembling at the sight of strangers.
They didn’t resist as Donna gently placed them into crates. But their mother was nowhere to be seen, having fled in fear.
That changed the moment the puppies began to cry. Their cries echoed through the house, and the mother came running. In that instant, it was clear how deeply she cared for her babies.
A Reluctant Mother Who Refused To Leave Them Behind

With the puppies now safe, Donna and her team turned their attention to the mother. They couldn’t leave her behind, even though she remained wary and difficult to approach.
Two additional volunteers arrived to assist, and together they devised a strategy.

They slowly cornered the frightened dog and managed to slip a leash around her. But leading her out wasn’t possible. The house was too unstable to risk walking her through it.
Instead, they prepared a large crate and carefully maneuvered it through the debris. With great care, they carried her out to safety.
Finally, mother and pups were reunited in the rescue vehicle and transported to the SRSL facility.
A Tender Reunion

The moment the mother, now named Mary Berry, was reunited with her five puppies was unforgettable.
Though still visibly shaken, Mary began to relax as her puppies nestled against her, drawing comfort from her presence.
“We get them set up in one of our offices with comfy blankets, bowls of food, and fresh water. We reunite this little family, and it is the sweetest moment. We face so much heartbreak in rescue, but this is a good day worth celebrating,” SRSL added in the post.

The puppies named Stodgy, Shortbread, Sponge, Showstopper, and Soggy Bottom will remain in care with Mary until they’re ready for adoption.
For now, they’re surrounded by warmth, nourishment, and gentle care, far removed from the decay and danger they once knew.
When the time comes, each one will find a loving home of their own, where they’ll be cherished for the rest of their lives.
