Life hasn’t been easy for Cola.
Unlike many other dogs, this sweet, two-legged girl struggled through most of it. Abused and neglected by her previous owners, Cola never had a chance to experience what true love feels like.
Then, one day, a miracle happened.
The New York rescuers did everything they could to provide Cola with what she had been missing all along. In return, she reciprocated with contagiously sweet enthusiasm – and resilience that left everyone in awe.
This is her story!
Cola’s Past Is Heartbreaking
Before arriving at Twenty Paws Rescue, in New York, Cola was rescued by Kannan Animal Welfare alongside her brother, who, sadly, didn’t make it.
She battled a lot of obstacles in her past, including the amputation of her hind legs.
Cola spent years in KAW care, trying to find a new life for herself. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, and TPR decided to give her a chance.
“Our little amputee has battled a lot of obstacles because of her extreme abuse. She’s a fighter and on a road to a much better life! She’s a gorgeous, smart 2-legged girl with so much love to give,” this New York City rescue wrote in a Facebook post.
In the first couple of months, Cola was a shy girl who hadn’t had it easy. She was quite reserved and afraid of interaction until she finally came out of her shell.
Thanks to a giant-hearted team of people who did everything to make Cola feel comfortable, this tiny girl started to show her cheerful personality.
Within weeks, Cola warmed up to her caregivers and her furry friends.
What really left everyone in awe, however, was her ability to adapt to her buddies without any problems. Even though she only had two legs, that didn’t stop Cola from becoming the most active, playful dog in foster care.
Beating The Odds
Cola, indeed, can do everything!
She runs, handles stairs, and enjoys playtime with other dogs as a regular dog. Over time, her body adapted to new circumstances and Cola is now seizing every opportunity to make every day the best day of her life.
“She does not need to be expressed, can handle stairs, runs around… she’s perfect,” TPR wrote.
However, her enthusiasm and agility come at a cost. Her caregivers noticed Cola having chronic pain, which is why they decided to get her a wheelchair. That, sadly, still wasn’t enough for this sweet girl to feel as comfortable as possible.
The vet team assessed that Cola’s back has unique fusions that prohibit her from using a wheelchair.
“She has wheels but cannot use them due to a fusion. She’s in rehab to help keep her front joints strong and we’re still exploring other mobility devices,” the rescue added.
That’s why her caregivers are currently working on creating a custom 3D-printed wheelchair for this brave girl. In collaboration with their partners, TPR will do their best to give Cola the best option for mobility, as she definitely deserves it!
The real challenge, though, is the fact that Cola still hasn’t found the right home. She’s currently in foster care in Connecticut, but what she really hopes for is a suitable family who will provide her with love and all the things she has been missing out on.
Hopefully, that day will come as soon as possible!
Good luck, sweet Cola!
