Crunchy, a tiny stray from St. Louis, Missouri, understood that struggle far too well. His small body was weak, and the heavy mats tangled through his fur made every step painful.
He had been carrying so much that no little dog should have to carry.
Even then, somewhere inside, Crunchy still held on to the belief that things could get better. He was exhausted and hurting, but he had not given up on the possibility that someone might finally see him.

Nearly 10 pounds of matted fur were shaved away in total.
“He was very scared when he first woke up after being sedated and shaved and cleaned. He would snap and hide — but he enjoyed being tucked in,” Natalie Thompson, the rescue’s director of marketing, told The Dodo.

After the last matted clump was gone, a completely new dog emerged. For the first time, his gentle face and bright eyes were visible.
But his recovery wasn’t finished. His paws, previously trapped in thick mats, were still inflamed and painful. He required patience, love, and gentle care to heal both his body and spirit.
Crunchy found solace in wearing a sweater that kept him warm and provided a sense of security. Gradually, he began to calm.
