Getting used to shelter life is never easy, especially for small pups who have only known the streets and have never felt the gentle touch of a human hand.
When Peaches and Layla, along with their 7-year-old mom, Lady, arrived at their new shelter home, they were overwhelmed by fear.
The puppies were especially uneasy whenever they were apart from their mom, since they had never spent time without her.
One touching moment, captured after a routine vet checkup, showed Layla and Peaches hugging each other for comfort. The photo went viral, melting hearts around the globe.
Lady, Layla, And Peaches Saved From A Filthy Pen

Last year, the Animal Charity of Ohio, located in Youngstown, received a call from the Youngstown Police Department about several dogs living in a filthy, abandoned pen.
Jane MacMurchy, the organization’s director, arrived to find a mother dog and her two pups in appalling conditions, all of them dirty and scared.
The little family was so frightened they clung to each other, unwilling to interact with anyone at first.

The ACO team quickly transported them to the shelter, determined to give them the care and socialization they needed.
“All 3 are very frightened from their complete isolation, the puppies cling to each other for comfort. They will now get the medical care and socialization they so desperately need. Welcome to Animal Charity, Lady, Peaches, and Layla,” wrote the ACO team on their Facebook.
The Puppies Were Too Scared To Be Without Their Mom
Having spent their lives in filthy, confined conditions surrounded by garbage and debris, none of the three dogs had ever experienced the outside world. Adjusting to the shelter environment would take time.
Jane and the team started with baths and initial vet exams. Lady seemed slightly more at ease around people, but her pups were terrified.
During the first vet visit, Lady was taken in before her puppies. Left alone, Layla and Peaches became distressed, unsure of what to do without their mom. They clung tightly to each other until she returned.

The sight of those two frightened puppies holding on for comfort deeply affected Jane and the staff.

Physically, all three were relatively healthy, so the focus shifted to confidence building and socialization.
The shelter organized training sessions, both together and separately, helping them slowly regain trust in people.
All Three Found Their Furever Homes
Though the first days felt long and challenging, within a week of focused training, Layla and Peaches began to relax. They became friendlier, more playful, and noticeably more confident.
Lady, known for her wiggly, happy demeanor, thrived on the attention from her new human friends.
Thanks to a partnership with Lake Humane Society in Mentor, Ohio, all three found loving forever homes.

Peaches, now renamed Sasha, enjoys splashing around in her family’s pool.
Lady and Layla also settled happily with their new families… Lady enjoys lounging on her cozy bed, while Layla loves spending her days with her canine buddy, Linus.

Once a frightened and insecure trio, they are now cherished family pets in three separate homes. Their transformation is a true testament to love and patience.
