We don’t know Dexter’s backstory, but the fact that he was cruelly dumped at Jones Beach in New York during one of the coldest months speaks volumes.
After he was left to fend for himself, the heartbroken pup didn’t know where to go and seek help. He was so scared and lonely.
Fortunately, a Good Samaritan spotted him on the beach and rushed to help him.
As soon as they opened their car to let Dexter in, the doggo quickly jumped in. He breathed a sigh of relief because he didn’t have to spend one more night out in the cold.
Hope For A Better Future

The doggo was brought to the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter located in Wantagh, New York.
He hoped that he would soon find a family who would show him what true love felt like.
Although Dexter attracted a lot of attention from potential adopters, he still hadn’t found his happy ending.
Sadly, he experienced disappointment after disappointment. He was adopted and returned five times.
His behavioral issues are the reason why he was returned to the New York shelter each time. The doggo exhibited signs of guarding, barrier reactivity, and sometimes stranger reactivity.
The shelter staff always made sure to explain everything about Dexter’s disposition and behavioral challenges to his adopters.

And yet, it wasn’t enough. His adopters couldn’t fully understand his issues because Dexter didn’t show signs of reactivity during their interaction at the shelter.
However, once he felt comfortable in a home, Dexter’s issues were brought to light, so his adoptive families returned him to the shelter.
Every time the pup was returned, his shelter friends did their best to console him and make him feel better.
The Doggo Needs Someone To Believe In Him

Dexter spent over 1,170 days at the shelter, waiting for his perfect fit, and the long stay at the shelter left its mark on him.
Although the dog can show some reactivity toward some people whom he doesn’t know, once he forms a strong bond with someone, he shows his affectionate and loyal personality.
Right now, Dexter needs a rescue group that will pull him from the shelter and help him start all over.
The pup would do best with a patient and loving family who will make sure he works with a trainer in order to fix his behavioral issues and help him settle into his new home.
“Dexter will thrive, he just needs someone willing to believe in him and help him write the happy ending he’s been waiting for,” Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter wrote on Facebook.

Although he was let down far too many times, Dexter still clings to hope that one day, he will find someone who understands him and gives him a chance to build a normal life filled with love.
We all hope that a rescue will soon step in and help Dexter find his happiness.
