Shelter dogs can spend such a long time waiting for someone to choose them.
People pass by kennel after kennel, often drawn to the youngest puppies or the smallest dogs first. Meanwhile, others sit there month after month, sometimes year after year, still hoping a visitor will finally stop and really see them.
Squishapotamus, a shelter dog from Austin, Texas, understood that kind of waiting in a heartbreaking way.
His situation was hard to miss. Squish was carrying almost double the weight his body should have had, and even ordinary movement looked difficult for him.
It showed in his slow steps, but it showed even more in his face.
There was a sadness there that seemed to come from neglect, loneliness, and far too much time being passed over.
Thankfully, Squish’s life was not going to stay trapped in that pain.
Squish Begins A New Journey

When Squish arrived at Austin Pets Alive! in Texas, it was clear he had a challenging path ahead.
He came in as a gentle giant, carrying the burdens of a dog who needed guidance and care. The uplifting part was that everyone at the shelter was committed to giving him the chance he had never received before.
For five months, the team worked with Squish on a structured plan. His days included a careful feeding schedule and regular activity. With consistency and dedication, his transformation slowly began to unfold.
Squish, who could barely manage short walks when he first came in, eventually shed an incredible 45 pounds.
“We did a double take, triple take, because Squish lost 45 pounds! Thanks to the help of our medical and care teams, he’s a whole new man since arriving in April and is truly thriving today,” the Texas rescue wrote on Instagram.
Even more inspiring was how quickly his personality changed. With each passing week, the once sluggish dog became more active and enthusiastic. His eagerness to participate in his new routine surprised everyone.
A Happier Dog Ready For The Next Chapter

Today, instead of moving slowly and struggling with simple tasks, Squish runs freely, plays with joy, and greets every day like a dog discovering life again.
Five months after arriving at APA, the sadness in his eyes has been replaced with warmth. Squish is affectionate, calm, and enjoys being around people. He also loves playing and showing off his newfound energy.
“He’s always up for a game of fetch or tug-o-war and looks forward to his walks around the neighborhood, but is just as happy to lounge beside you for a cozy afternoon nap. His mellow nature and playful spirit strike the perfect balance,” Squish’s profile reads.

While he continues to thrive with his caregivers, the staff hopes he will soon begin the chapter that truly matters: life with a forever family who will cherish him.
“Now, he’s ready to be Man’s Best Friend! Come look him up and down at our Cesar Chavez location or email [email protected] to take him back to your place today,” Austin Pets Alive! concluded in the post.
His transformation has already made him a favorite among the team. Now everyone hopes his story will reach the right family.
Squish’s ideal home would be a calm, adults-only household where he can be the only pet. While he is friendly when meeting other dogs, his greatest joy comes from spending quiet time relaxing next to people.
With any luck, the perfect family is close to finding him.
