Gilbert has never been the kind of dog whose size tells the whole story. The tiny Chihuahua carries a stubborn little spirit that has helped him through more disappointment than any senior pup should know.
Homelessness had already touched his life once before. Then, just when it seemed he had finally been chosen, he lost that chance again almost immediately.
Three days after his adoption, Gilbert was returned because the other dog in the house grew jealous and his new owner decided he could not stay.
So he was left waiting all over again, small in body and heavy with heartbreak. Just when that disappointment seemed ready to settle in, Aimee appeared and gave his story somewhere else to go.
Aimee Crosses Paths With Gilbert

Aimee Burton, a dog trainer from San Diego, California, stumbled across Gilbert’s photo on a shelter website. Something about his face captured her heart instantly.
She filled out an adoption application right away, only to learn that someone else had already taken him home.
Aimee felt a pang of disappointment but told herself it wasn’t meant to be.
Then, just three days later, the shelter called with unexpected news: Gilbert had been returned. Without hesitation, Aimee got in her car and drove to bring him home.

When she learned more about his background, she was stunned. Gilbert had been found as a stray wandering the streets of Lancaster, California. At only 4.8 pounds, surviving out there had been no easy task.
“There’s coyotes and foxes and lots of wildlife. It’s kind of out there. The fact that he survived was pretty crazy,” Aimee said.
Settling Into His New Life

At first, Gilbert was timid and unsure. After all the changes he had endured, it was clear that trusting again would take time.
Aimee gave him space and introduced him slowly to her other dogs, making sure he felt safe. Day by day, his confidence returned. Soon, his lively spirit began to shine through.

Despite having a bad knee, a collapsing trachea, and dental problems, Gilbert’s zest for life never faded. He quickly became the heart of the household.
He might not be as energetic as his younger companions, but he still holds his own.
Sometimes, when Aimee takes the other dogs for walks, he stays on the porch and watches them with longing eyes. The moment they come back, he greets them with pure excitement, tail wagging and joy restored.
A Sweet And Quirky Companion
Aimee’s favorite moment each day is waking Gilbert up in the morning. His gentle smile and bright eyes greet her as if he’s ready to face a brand-new adventure.
Gilbert also has a few funny habits. He loves munching on lettuce, avoids grass whenever possible, and prefers walking only on dirt or pavement.
He can even get a little possessive at times, “gumming” his housemates playfully since he has only three teeth left.

Most of all, Gilbert adores comfort. He’s happiest when curled up next to Aimee, wrapped snugly in a soft blanket.
“He loves to be in comfort. He always wants to be on a blanket or under a blanket,” Aimee said.
Once left unwanted and alone, Gilbert now lives surrounded by love and security. Every nap, cuddle, and morning greeting is proof that he has finally found the happiness he always deserved.
