For Reggie, it took one moment of kindness to turn a hopeless situation into something brighter. Help reached him at exactly the point when he needed it most.
The six-year-old Maltese had been surrendered by his family to a shelter in Arizona, and the condition he arrived in was deeply upsetting.
His coat had become so badly matted that it tugged painfully at his skin. Beneath all that thick, tangled fur were painful sores, hidden from view but impossible to ignore once he was examined.
He hardly even resembled a dog anymore, buried under layers of neglect and the sheer weight of his own coat.
Then came the grooming session.
It lasted two and a half hours, and by the time it was over, Reggie’s life looked completely different.
An Exhausting Battle Against Matted Fur
When Reggie arrived at the Arizona Humane Society, it was immediately clear that he had endured neglect for far too long. Though he missed the comfort of his former home, his most urgent fight was against the thick, tangled mass covering his body.
His coat was so severely matted that ordinary tools could not penetrate it.
It wasn’t just fur anymore, it had hardened into a shell of dirt and debris that needed a full-scale grooming effort. The shelter’s team gathered their supplies, determined to give him the relief he so desperately needed.
Amitie Davis, one of the Humane Society’s dedicated groomers, later shared how difficult the process truly was.
Each section of his coat was filled with filth, with the worst area wrapped tightly around his neck, cutting off circulation.
“It took a very long time, multiple people going back to it, and then moving on to something else, and then going back to the neck. My scissors couldn’t even cut through the matting,” David said in a Facebook video.
Because the procedure was too painful to endure while awake, Reggie was gently sedated to keep him calm and safe.
Over two hours later, a team of groomers finally succeeded in freeing him from his suffocating coat.
When the last mat fell away, it was as if the little dog had been reborn. His skin could finally breathe, and the team watching him emerge could hardly contain their emotions.
A Transformation Few Could Believe
When the grooming was complete, the results were breathtaking.
More than a full pound of matted hair had been removed, revealing a bright-eyed, white-furred dog underneath.
The contrast between the before and after was astonishing, it was difficult to believe they were the same animal.
Once he felt clean and light again, Reggie’s spirit transformed too. He trotted through the shelter halls with confidence, wagging his tail for everyone who passed. His wounds were gently treated, and he was scheduled for neutering and continued veterinary care to complete his recovery.
The staff treated him to a warm bubble bath and a well-deserved pampering session, then dressed him in a soft new sweater to protect his sensitive skin.
Reggie’s story quickly spread online, capturing hearts across the country. Soon after, a loving family came forward to adopt him, giving him the forever home he had always deserved.

Today, Reggie spends his days playing, cuddling, and enjoying every bit of affection he receives. His old pain is behind him, replaced by comfort, warmth, and love.
