As soon as construction workers at a Texas landfill noticed a pregnant dog wandering around the site, they suspected she had been left there.
The frightened dog was clearly searching for food.
Because the landfill is a common place for people to dump unwanted dogs, the workers always try to help them until rescue arrives.
They attempted to care for the dog by offering her food. But not long after, she vanished.
When she reappeared days later, much thinner than before, the workers reached out to Three Little Pitties Rescue located in Houston, Texas, for assistance.
Trying To Track Down Her Puppies

Nancy Cowan, a volunteer and board member, rushed to the location. She had rescued other abandoned mother dogs from that same landfill before and was familiar with the area.
She and the workers were certain the dog had given birth and was keeping her newborns hidden.
Since Cowan knew that mother dogs often tuck their puppies beneath dumpsters, she began looking there.
“I spotted a dumpster that had high grass growing around it and a little beaten path going under it. So that was my clue,” Cowan told The Dodo.
She peeked underneath and spotted the mama dog nestled with her babies.

Cowan tried to help them, but the dog, who was later named Lucy, was too scared to let her near the pups.
She continued visiting daily, bringing food for the mother, until Lucy finally began to trust her.
When Lucy realized Cowan meant no harm, she allowed her to collect the puppies.

After safely gathering the pups and securing Lucy, Cowan contacted the rescue team, who arrived shortly after.
Lucy and her little ones were transported to a nursery to begin their recovery.
Now that they were safe, Lucy could finally relax and nurse her pups without fear.
On The Path Toward Joy

At the nursery, Lucy was showered with care and affection during her two-month stay. With their help, she began to forget her painful past.
To honor her on Mother’s Day, the staff surprised her with breakfast in bed.
Lucy beamed with joy, her eyes full of warmth. She was clearly thankful for everything the team had done.
“She is one grateful mama and we are grateful to be a part of her journey,” Three Little Pitties Rescue wrote in an Instagram post.
Once Lucy finishes her spay procedure, she’ll begin her search for a loving forever home.
Her pups are thriving and now looking for families of their own.
One of her babies has already been adopted, while the rest—Rusty, Teddy, Willow, Sadie, and Cleo—are still waiting to be chosen.
Let’s hope Lucy and her little ones all find the happiness they deserve.
