Every day brings new reminders of how many dogs are forced to survive on their own, roaming streets without reliable food, shelter, or anyone to look after them. It’s a harsh reality faced by countless vulnerable pups.
Even in the middle of that hardship, compassion still finds a way through.
Joey Tuccio, a dedicated rescuer in Los Angeles, California, has built his life around helping animals in need. After years of stepping in for dogs others overlooked, he has rescued more than he can even remember.
That same empathy guided him again when he came across a sick mother dog and her hungry litter.
A Frail Mother Pittie And Her Starving Litter

Joey felt a pang of heartbreak when he realized this Pit Bull had been surviving alone on the streets of Los Angeles for two long years.
Her frail frame bore the weight of every hardship she had endured.
Her condition was dire, and the situation became more urgent when Joey and his team discovered she had recently given birth.
Her puppies were crying out for food, but she was unable to nurse them. Infection had affected her nipples, preventing her from nourishing her litter.
Time was of the essence. Joey and the Starts With One Today team rushed her to a veterinary clinic, determined to save both mother and pups.
The veterinary staff acted quickly, providing immediate care. Slowly, she began to regain strength, though the sorrow in her eyes lingered.

The dog, later named Lena, was eventually discharged from the hospital, marking the beginning of her journey toward recovery.
Surrounded by her puppies, Lena experienced affection and safety for the first time in years. The warmth of care and attention from her rescuers became a daily comfort she had never known.
Witnessing her transformation filled Joey with deep satisfaction. Despite years of rescues, each recovery left a lasting impact, and Lena’s story was no exception.
A Milestone Rescue And A Future Filled With Love

After more than a decade of saving dogs, Lena represented a special milestone: she was Joey’s 200th rescue.
Even after witnessing so many recoveries, Lena’s journey felt as significant as his very first rescue. Joey’s happiness grew when he learned that each of Lena’s puppies had found loving homes of their own.
The final chapter, however, still awaited: finding a permanent home for Lena herself. Joey remained steadfast in his mission to ensure that this courageous mother would know a life filled with love.
“Considering what she went through, she still loves people so much. She’s smart, she’s adorable. The ideal home for Lena would be a home with somebody that can be a little patient with her, which she’ll return with love and snuggles,” Joey shared in his interview with The Dodo.
Until her forever family arrives, Lena remains safe with her rescuers, basking in the affection she had been denied for so long.
Thanks to Joey and the compassionate team who intervened, this once-overlooked Pittie now has the opportunity to enjoy the peaceful, loving life she was always meant to have.
